Oil cooler leak
« on: April 11, 2006, 04:14:08 PM »

Had to put my bike in the shop for leaks around the mounting bracket for the oil cooler. Took it in when it was just "weeping" around the gasket, and the dealer told me they all do it. Changed the oil and noticed the build up, but figured it was the little bit I spilled pulling the filter off. Two weeks later, and it's STILL leaking. Finally get it in, and they tell me the holes where the screws go in is stripped out.

Anyone experience similar problems?

Now that I think about it, I've wiped the bottom of the cooler where the cooling fins meet the cooler frame a couple of times. The oil had attracted road dirt. Never thought about a leak. Is/was yours dripping??

The last two times I've had mine in for service, it drips for a few days after I get it back, right under the oil cooler.

If you look at your bike from the right side just beyond the pipes, there's a plate with two torx screws. They said that is the adapter or connection to the oil cooler. THAT is where I'm leaking from.

After my last service. mine kept leaking where they had spilled some. Finally took the cover off and blew it dry with compressed air and have had no leak since. It's amazing how long it can drip even after several rides.

I've got a 2 liter soda bottle cut such that it slides under the filter and catches the mess before it gets to the bike.  Cheapest tool I ever bought.

I changed the oil in mine a couple of weeks ago and it dripped everytime I rode for a few days. Finally stopped, I guess it was in the cooler cover. I think a 2 liter catch can is in my future thanks Twolane

not sure if this is a fix but I just spray brake cleaner in my oil cooler cover after each service and have no oil drip issues [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

If there are any rubber lines at the connection points I'm not sure I'd want brake parts cleaner just setting on them.

While in for service I pointed out the "weaping" arount the cover.  They said they needed to order the gasket.  Unfortunately they need to remove the exhaust to get to the screws!  I am glad I did not get the same reply as you: "they all do it"... That's just their way of saying they do not want to be bothered.  So we will see if that fixes the problem.

From what I understand some of the older style oil coolers would leak when the filter was taken off and after would sometomes leak all of the time.

The fix for this was to drill through the adapter plate into bracket and tap a roll pin through the adapter and bracket that would prevent the adapter backing off when the filter was removed.

The problem you mention was the same with my 03 Heritage.  It was the adapter plate that would "break the seal" and leak just with normal riding or when tightening down the oil filter.  HD finally came out with a revised plate to prevent that.  I went through MOCO Cust Service (Dealer did not have a clue and would not do the roll pin fix).  HD MOCO covered the cost ($200+) for the part and they contacted the service manager to set it up.

The leak on my 06 is not at the adapter though.  It is on the cover plate facing the exhaust pipes (3" oblong plate held by 2 screws)

I know the plate you're talking about, 'cause I stay awake at night trying to figure out what I'm gonna do to make it look better.
