Feedback on new SE ULTRA
« on: April 12, 2006, 08:26:32 PM »

I've been reading this site for about 2 weeks now...great site and lot's of great ideas!  I'm a bit of a technogearhead, so have enjoyed reading all the stuff here...my questions/statements: I've got a ship date of May 12th for a Black Crimson/Slate (everybody keep their fingers crossed for me about the paint!!)...the only dealer I could find who would take a deposit and not charge me more than MSRP is about 250 miles away in South Alabama (the guys around here wanted 2K over), so I'm going to rent a trailer about 100 miles from here, pick the bike up on the trailer, drive back to the trailer rental place (another HD dealer), then ride an old highway which is not the interstate to get it back to B'ham, being careful about the break-in recommendations.  Sound like a good plan? Also, thoughts on getting the true dual Rhineharts, the SE AC (though the dealer says it already has that on it...I'm reading different things here), and a chrome starter to fill the "black hole".  Warranty problems with this idea? Is there a download that the dealer can do for this basic setup before I pick it up?  Or, should I just run it stock for a while and then do the above mentioned mods?  It's important to me that the warranty be intact, and I'm probably going to get the extended warranty that covers everything so the local dealer can't balk on working on the bike should anything (heaven forbid) need to be fixed.  Will the dealer pull the factory starter, and give me some credit for it towards the chrome version since it's new?  A "swap" would be nice with me paying the difference between the two.  I'm also going to do the chrome inner primary at the 1K service (this seems to make more sense because they have to drain the fluids anyhow)...I think that will ad a lot to the bike's engine, looks-wise.  Also considering the head bolt bridge ? covers (finned variety).  Anything else you guys can thing of within reason?

Also looking at either the Garmin 2720/2730 or the Lowrance 500...thoughts?  Going to get the JS lift too (big wheeled version).  Hell, I haven't even got this one in the basement yet, went to the local dealer this past Saturday, and saw the SEVROD in the red color and fell in love with that for a second "play bike".  The ultra will be me and my girlfriend's bike to take some fun trips on, so was thinking I might need a hotrod to play on by myself.   Tentatively planning on the Maggie Valley trip this fall, so hope to meet some of you guys there....my girl will be with me too....she won't be the only female, I hope!!

Did I leave out anything?   ;) 8-) [smiley=jalapeno.gif] [smiley=jalapeno.gif]

Welcome tcnbham,
If I were you and I was planning on keeping the FLHTCUSE for a long time and having a dealer do all the work on the bike I would get the info direct from him. Some dealers will not work on or install products they did not install. Then some will try to blame your "Aftermarket" product for causing damage etc. The courts say though that the dealer/MOCO etc. needs to prove the product had a direct effect on the problem to deny claim but it could still be a long drawn out proceedure to get your bike on the road.
Also you may want to consider the EPA regulations that may affect your ability to get an inspection or registration down the road if they are ever enforced. The regulations have been discussed here and also in American Iron magazine.
Personnally if I was to modify my 103" I would consider a complete package from somebody like Freedom Cycles and not do it in pieces. If done seperately you will probably need lots of dyno time to get the bike to run right.
I doubt if the dealer would give you a tradin for the original starter but maybe you could sell it on Ebay or a swap meet?
For a GPS I like the Garmin 2720 I have. If you think you will use all the features of the 2730 then it may be worth the extra money. I have XM already on the bike and my truck and I wouldn't use the other features so I saved money by getting the 2720. It switches between the bike and other vehicles very easily and is easy to use even if you don't read the mannual. ;D
Several folks here have said they thought they would need a smaller stripped down bike for around town short trips and soon descovered the "smaller" bike was left home many times and got neglected. The FLHTCUSE was soo much fun they didn't need the second bike. But of course if your budget and garage can hold a second bike then go for it! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Thanks for the input...I was leaning towards the 2720.  I do plan on keeping the bike for a very long time, as I tend to drive the wheels off things before getting anything new (own a Subaru Outback, if that's any indication).   Thanks for the feedback!!

WELCOME to the site. Anything CHROME   [smiley=jalapeno.gif]

I gotta tell you guys as much as everyone around here complains about the local HD Store, I'm glad I'm dealing with them instead the stores I hear about here.

Good luck You are going to really enjoy your new scooter.

What are you going to use as a tuner after you install the pipes and air cleaner?  Save your self some money and have the primary install when they do the starter.

I saw the rear footpegs at the dealer the other day....seems like a good thing to add for my sweetie!!  She's itty-bitty...5'3" and 115lbs, so will probably need the other foot positions to get comfy...got to keep the lady happy, you know... :P  Got us both leathers from Fox Creek (the best I've ever seen), doo-rags in various colors, gloves from Fox Creek, and boots from Cruiserworks   [smiley=banana.gif],  bell Mag 8 helmets, and am going to order some chaps, again from Fox.  If you haven't checked them out, do so!!

I used to have an old Panhead back in the early 70's...chopped, of course, and a few metric bikes afterwards, but it's been 20 years since I've owned a bike, so I'm really, really fired up about this SE!!  Haven't forgotten how to ride though!!

This really is a great site for information, and I'm glad I found it!!  I can see all the chrome blinding my better judgement already!! ;D [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=jalapeno.gif]

Welcome to the site TC.  Things may have changed since I got my SEEG, but at that time H-D only offered maps (downloads) for H-D pipes.  I've got a SEUC on the way and I'm doing the Rineharts, Stage 1 A/C, and SERT at delivery.  The parts guy I worked with told me they had a map for the SERT with that setup so no dyno required.  I'll see how the bike runs and decide if I need a dyno after break-in.

Thanks Bob! Big help...I'll call my dealer today and talk to their parts dept and see if I can do the same thing...I don't want to get too radical with the bike, but I've read a bunch of good things on here about those pipes and the Stage I AC....guess that's going to set me back another 1500 or so, but I read the gain in HP is worth it!!  I just want the bike to be as strong as it can be without getting into the engine at all.  Let me know how yours runs with just the map...if there are no drivability issues (backfires, idle, hot rear cylinder, etc) I don't really care about another 2 or 3 HP gained from a dyno run.  I've just read so much about the stock setup being really lean, and that can't be good for the engine in the long run, and I'm in this for the long run. Congrats on getting the bike...the Haze is beautiful...I've seen a couple of them around here and almost ordered that color myself...hopefully, they've got the paint problems solved on my color by now!!

Congrats on your new money pit.....Wait to do the chrome starter when you do the inner primary as my mechanic told me that the primary cover has to come off to do the starter.......after he changed out my new inner at 1k, and I have still the starter sitting in the box. Hehe, just kidding Jim. I also got the chain tensioner.

Yes...and to think that I actually thought at one point in time that I was getting a bike "that would not need to have anything else on it, honey"  ;D  So, based on the feedback I'm getting, here's my list so far:

Rinehart True Duals
SE Stage I AC (can anyone tell me...do I need to order the K&N from Zipper...also, have any of you seen the "new" chrome backplate for the SE Ultra? It's on the HD website...would this plate, and a K&N do the job?)
SERT & map
Chrome Inner Primary
Chrome Starter
Automatic Chain Tensioner
GPS (undecided)

Break in is pretty basic- pelow 3000 rpm for 50 miles, then below 3500 until 500 miles.  There are some slight mph restrictions, but I doubt you'll have to worry if you're travelling 2 lane!
