I'm going to abstain....  I was a firm believer that gear drive cams were unnecessary in the later hydraulic tensioner engines. Now some problems with excessive tensioner shoe wear are starting to surface.    Don't know whether it was do to a poor cam install or something else. I haven't personally had any problems with any builds I've done in house. It's worth watching.

John you should see what the cams do to the babbitt bearing in the cam plate when gear drives are used....I was shocked by the amount of ware in a few hundred miles. I have removed two sets of gear driven cams from customers builds because of the excessive wear.....new cam plates had to be installed.

I need some input from old graybeard engine experts such as yourselves on the whole "primary chain tensioner issue" I have been reading about.
Is the tensioner on my 2008 FXDSE at risk for failure ? What is the best replacement , in your opinion ? etc.-etc.

Thanks for the input Scott, and it's not taken the wrong way. 

I have gotten really good feedback from those you mention, and I would hope that my going a different direction isn't taken as an insult.  In the end, I went with what I felt most comfortable with given the advise of a guy I trust and has been working on my bikes for as long as I've owned them. 

When I post a question, I get exactly what I want, opinions.  Keep the advise coming, it at least allows me to ask intelligent questions of my guy, who by the way has looked at the site on many occassions when reviewing things with me. 

I hope to have good success with my choice.  If not, I know that my mechanic will make things right.

My Guy is also putting S&S 585s in my engine but is using the chain drives so I will let you know how it works out he seems to be very comfortable with these cams he has used them before and like the results.

I have used 585's in my FLHTCUSE3 with great success after 40,000 miles.
Not a popular cam choice on this site.
The guys use woods and a few other makes a lot, with great success I might add.
I am putting them in my new bike, as I like them so much.

Some of the guys (who def. know more then me) don't seem to like them cause of the crank run out issue.(I mean the gear drive unit, not S&S products)
I can def, understand that and would never second guess there educated opinion.
But it does seem to me that I have heard just as many tensioner problems as gear-drive problems now that these bikes are getting miles on them.

Anyway, I think no matter what you do to these new bikes its a crap shoot.(even if you don't alter them they break so WTF)

Well I got the 585's in way better I will post dyno charts soon 107HP and 113TQ we decided on chain drives my Mechanic loves them and said he has installed several sets with no issues in the later 110's put 110 miles on it yesterday! All good so far.

Thanks for the updates on this.  I was with my mechanic on Friday after the install of the gear drive, and he was tweeking the map on PCV with a Dynojet Rep that had stopped by.  I'm excited to get some miles on it (probably April) and then see what numbers we are pulling on the Dyno.
