45 amp rotor?
« on: February 12, 2011, 10:25:56 AM »

I have several add ons,Piaa head and passing lights,  xm kit,HW amp, iPod,running lights in rear,   I'm okay most of the time, but the xm radio will cut out when at idle a lot of time.   Seems like the voltage isn't keeping up.  It's in the 04 Seeg.  Could it be that I need a high amp rotor?  That's me just thinking again.

It's possible Stu.  You can actually measure the load.  But the rotor change can't hurt and it's easy enough to do.  Might take a look here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360201121350

That's an ebay seller who handles the parts from an aftermarket OEM.  I've used their 45 amp rotors a few times.  They look good and have worked fine.  And it's much cheaper than the HD branded alternative.

On the red bike (the 05) in the winter with all the lights on, heated seat, heated clothing, trailer lights, tour pak lights, radio w/HW amp, etc etc I'd max out the charging system and would have to turn off the spotlights.  The bike actually had more overhead than it would have stock because all the corner lights are LED and the headlight was HID; all of which pull less than their incandescent or halogen original pieces.  But I'd still maxed it out.  With the rotor change it never reaches the max end of the charging sytem now.

Thanks Don. I think I'm gonna give that a try.  Gets kind of frustating when things just turn off.   Really appreciate your input.  Thanks again.  :2vrolijk_21:

Good luck with a no-drama upgrade.  When we start loading these things up with more toys adding a bit of overhead so we just never have to think about it is certainly a good thing.

Are you doing this yourself?
Heed the advice in the manual about the 45 amp rotor magnet strength.

Don will probably agree here, if it doesn't hurt his fingers too much to think about it

Anyway, look on this thread near the end to see the non Harley puller I used.

If you are not careful you could take you fingertips off.

Pulled is a very good idea.  Cheap little narrow pullers like you can get from most parts stores for just a few bucks will work fine though.

Even using a puller I like to have some wooden shims on hand to shove in behind the rotor as it comes off. Have gotten the damn thing to the end of the shaft using a puller, unhooked the puller and had the magnets slam it back into place -- unlike Twolanerider who could not scratch his ass without bunging up a finger, I prefer to avoid digit damage.

Thanks for the warning, you guys,,, I wouldn't attempt doing this without a buddy of mine..  I'm sure thats one hell of a magnet and lots of care must be given.  I'll even warn him.. Thanks to you all again.

Some of the small steering wheel pullers aren't quite narrow enough where the bolts go through the "ears" of the puller.  There are a couple around my garage I've taken a Dremel to to make them narrower.

Fiddle with the bolt length also.  It's easy to use bolts that are so long you haven't cleared everything before you run out of travel.  Use bolts that are only just long enough to reach.  You'll be good to go.

You can take the old one off with a pair of Allen wrenches, put the 90 degree end in the holes and just pull.

The tricky part is installing the new one.
The steering wheel puller in my pics is a just a standard puller, although it is a Snap On, so I don't know if that made a difference with size. Most of the cheaper pullers have a lot of steel on the gear side. The Snap On is fairly flat allowing closer access.
