Where's The Battery?
« on: April 15, 2006, 10:18:51 PM »

I am really embarassed to ask this but "Where is the battery and how to I get to it"?  I know this may seem very basic to most of you but to the untrained eye, this is quite a quandry!  I think it must be under the seat but how do I remove the seat?

I went to my local HD today and picked my wife up a heated vest.  The instructions on the vest suggest that the connector must go to the battery.  I want to take her for a long ride tommorrow and it is a little cold here.  Please help me to make her ride a little more comfortable.

Hey Canuck, you need to invest in a shop manual for your scooter, 'cause you're gonna want to do more than find the battery before all is said and done.  Your 'Owners Manual' (if you got one) will tell you where the battery is located. Open some beers and start taking things apart. :o  har!   spyder

You should see the International FLHTCUSE Manuel.  It is 4 inches thick and I was really excited thinking about all the good stuff that would be inside.  To my surprise, the manuel is written in 6 different languages [smiley=nixweiss.gif].  The english version (which is all I can read) is only about 70 pages long and has very little information.  I am going to order the supplement but until it arrives [smiley=nixweiss.gif].  I have figured this out though by just taking things apart so everything is ok.  Thanks for the thoughts though.

Canuck  When I was 13 I took apart my first motorcycle  DIdn't know any better and that's how I learned. When I think of it, the $900 that bike cost was as much to a 13 year old as 35K is to me at 52 so what the hell. The only way your really gonna learn is like most of us, by effin it up and havin to fix your mistakes. You'll be ok, just remember the story about the Heart Surgeon and the mechanic.

Quick and easy answer to your question is A) yes it's under the seat B) the terminals are metic not American Standard because the battery is from a Japanese supplier 10mm for the nuts on the terminals.  C) most likely the directions for the heated vest will reference the manual somewhere so you need that whether you feel like dealing with 400 pages or not. You only have to read the section relating to what your doing at any one time  Remeber Gahndi  "A walk of a thousand miles begins with one step " You'll be fine dude and we're here for you when you need us

There's a screw at the rear of the seat.  You can get to it with a screw driver going down behind the seat.  The seat will then lift off sliding first to rear (to clear a tongue that slides in under a notch in the frame just below the tank) and then coming back forward and out from under the tour pak.  Once the seat is off the battery will be an easy find.  Good luck!

Canuck,

If you still have problems call your neighbour in Calgary, geezerglide, 403-606-7393 and I'll assist you in hooking up the wiring for your wife's heated vest.

Also need to disconnect the passenger grab strap that is over the seat...from the LEFT side...I did it from the right (Stupid)

And, good luck with the terminal on the ground side, there is interference...read some good suggestions in this thread:

You guy's are great [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif].  I really appreciate the help.  The install went well.  It was just a little weird pulling apart my bike as I always worry I will do something wrong.  I think Spiderman's idea is a good one:  I am going to consider finding an older Harley and pulling it apart and building a "fun" bike.  This is something I could do with my 17 year old son and we could both learn.  I was one of these kids that grew up without a father so anything mechanically oriented is beyond my range of skills.  BTW the suggestion to disconnect the ground first was a good one [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif].  Thanks again.

Unless they changed, the connector for the heated vest is the same for the trickle charger you most likely have the pig tail for.

i made that mistake once, blew the fuse instantly, trickle fuse is less then 2 amps if i remeber right, heated gear was 30 amp fuse

SO would that make the vest do a replay of the guy with the dry sponge in The Green Mile ?  :D

The fuse for the battery tender wires is 7.5 amp.  The reason I know that is that I made the mistake of hooking up a 10 amp charger through it once - couldn't imagine why it wasn't charging.

BTW - the accessory connector is on a 15 amp circuit.  I'm not sure what a heated vest pulls, but I imagine you will want at least a dedicated 30 amp circuit.
