oil scavanger
« on: February 19, 2011, 10:28:04 AM »

Any of you guys ever use one of these? My buddy has one and swears by it.
The down side is if you used it everytime for an oil change you would have to remove your oil temp unit. The upside is it would be nice to do a complete oil flush once a year.
Just looking for opinions...........  :nixweiss:

yea I thought the same thing. The only thing I liked about it was I use
synthetic and synthetic doesnt hold dirt or metal in suspension like dino oil does. So
if you would flush once a year it should grab all that metal and dirt that
lays in the out of reach places and hopfully not end up in the bearing
races.

I saw the inventor use one at ACME choppers last summer during bike week in Laconia.  While it did perform as advertised I guess it would be hard to prove one way or the other.  If you like it you have the choice of using it, if you feel like Twolanerider and many other experienced riders out there the old stand by has worked for a very long time.  I would consider using one if my oil looked broken down into a white frothy concoction like it did on my old Plymouth Volare.

This topic has been discussed many times on this and other forums so there is information out there.  It can't hurt just not sure if it helps!  Most guys on this site take good care of their rides and change their fluids more frequently than required so it's unlikely they will add more work to an already messy project.

Not sure who told you that story John, but it isn't true.  The synthetics that meet the current SAE and API specifications have the same detergent properties as the dino oils.  The specs aren't different for syn versus dino.

As for the extra flushing, since there are no definitive long term testing results either from this company or better yet from an independent testing company, your guess as to any real benefit is as good as anyones.  I tend to look at it this way.  If you want to do an annual "extra good" oil change, just buy a couple extra quarts of oil and after draining the old oil pour the two quarts in and fire the engine up for a couple minutes, then drain again.  That should ease your mind about the few ounces of "dirty" oil that was left in the crankcase and cam chest, and you could do that for more than ten to fifteen years before you would spend the same amount those folks charge for their device and the extra oil it uses during the flush cycle.

It's a slick (no pun intended) idea, and I can definitely see how it would appeal to a compulsive individual (like I used to be).  But while it won't do any harm, other than to your wallet, I don't see where it would do much good either.

BTW, assuming you run a decent oil filter, that dark oil they show in the ad isn't necessarily full of dirt and metal particles.  You don't really change the oil to remove "dirt", you change oil to renew the worn out additives, and eliminate things like fuel and water that the filter doesn't remove.

Good post Jerry.  :2vrolijk_21:
Thats what I wanted to hear.
This is why I like to talk here. You guys seem to hit the nail on the head. Plus it gets entertaining too.
I am not sure where I learned about the syn dropping dirt, I believe it was on an oil report site. It was back when syn's were hitting the market. I do agree with I havent needed it for 30 yrs why now.
Its good to bounce ideas tho.......thanks

Better get your rings checked.......Usually dark colored oil is an indicator your rings are going bad. :P

Wow, I agree with most of you guys.
If I ever become that anal please shoot me.  HAHA
Just seems like a large waste of my time. I don't ever expect to be able to drain all fluids during a change.
Even if its my truck or wife's car. You never get it all.
Maybe it does some good, but I will never know. :P
