New Wet Motor Coming ??
« on: February 24, 2011, 11:40:20 AM »

Did you guys see the article in the new HOG magazine intitled "12 Reasons to Love Your Air Cooled Engine".  The end must be near when #5 is "They Beat The Heat".  :nixweiss: Where there's smoke there is usually a new product on the way.  Doc

Wet Motor Coming?  Of course there is!

      1.  Smart?  Fuel injection has nothing to do with air or water cooled.  How does this make you love an air cooled moter?

      2.  Clean?  Just because the run super lean to meet emissions does not make them cleaner than any water cooled motor.

      3.  Efficient?  True on the low friction but compare a 110" motor from Honda.   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:

      4,  Powerful?  See #3, above.

      5,  They beat the heat?   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:  :huepfenlol2:  I can't stop!  :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:

      6.  Balanced?   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:  An in line four is balanced.  An opposed twin is balanced.  The 45* twin is inherently imbalanced.  The counter weights added by HD suck power from the motor.  At least those of us with the "A" motors don't have this "anchor" in our motors.

      7.  They sing?  Plenty of air cooled motors sing.  Pick your favorite.

      8.  Test of time?   What about technology?  I would take a four cylinder version of the V Rod motor anytime.  I have often said my next HD will be water cooled.

      9.  They're stremlined?   See V Rod.

      10.  Durable?  How many of us have the extended warranty and what water cooled engine is not?

      11.  Historic?  Yes.  See #8, above.

      12.  Beautiful?  See V Rod.

That was for generation X, but was a flop. The top selling brand street bike, ragardless of displacement, for the 18-34 set is HD and the V-rod isn't their favorite bike. The next highest brand only appeals to 15% of them. This is a quote from the editor of HOG in the latest issue. I guess you could use this as reason #13 to love the air cooled engine if you needed one, but we need a wet motor for us boomers with our baggers. Lou

If you take a 2011 Road Glide Limited Ultra Classic for a test ride you won't GAS about waiting for a wetbike, trust me. Skip the CVO version with that POS 110 in it, save yourself $15k you can use to have your little tow behind painted to match and buy one buddy.

Well it's fact that they tested the V-Rod in AZ and if they're coming out with a new wet motor, they would probably use the same facility again. My question however would be which engine platform do people think it'll be based on ? The last Buell's produced by H-D had a 999cc Rotax wet motor. That engine is used in the Polaris Spider 3 wheeler among other things. My neighbor has a Spider and it hustles down the road for all the extra weight of the third wheel and associated hardware. Does the Rotax put out more TQ than the H-D V-Rod engine ? I know V-Rods pump out gobs of HP but are low on TQ compared to the air cooled pushrod V-Twins.

I'm pretty sure Rotax ownes Polaris and it might be a uncomfortable for Harley to partner with them because of Victory...but wouldn't a Harley/Rotax merger make sence. I've never been able to blow up a Rotax engine in my PWC's even if Beags rides em. Just sayin  :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

I believe SkiDoo's have Rotax engines in them and SeaDoo as well. Since SeaDoo, SkiDoo is owned by CanAm which used to be Bombardier which is who builds the Spider not Polaris - - my mistake on that.  Mea Culpa   Anyway, since CanAm isn't much into the motorcycle business, I think that's how the last of the Buells ended up with Rotax engines.

I would imagine that Harley would design and produce their own power plant. In the past they have fended off the EPA with the threat of going out of business without the air-cooled engines that run 99% of their product lines and keep all of those people employed during a down economy, American Icon, American jobs Fan Base, blah, blah. That is only going to last so long before they are forced to convert to liquid cooled (not just an oil cooler). I have no doubt that they are working on a couple of new Water cooled engines, one for the sportster platform and one for the "big twin" platform that is versitile enough to be able to upcharge the customer for a CVO version with more CCs of the same motor.  :P :P :P

BTW:

Can-Am is manufactured by Bomardier, as is SeaDoo, SkiDoo, Rotax, Evinrude, Lear Jet and the rest. BRP = Bommardier Recreational Products

I believe that Can-Am is actually the parent Corporation having bought out BRP some years ago.

Also, wasn't the V-Rod engine designed and built by Porsche ?

And as I said, the last of the Buell's had Rotax engines in them .

It might be in H-D Inc's best interest to outsource their engines.
