Just wondering...
« on: April 20, 2006, 03:26:08 AM »

Hey Members,
I'm new to the board and this is my first post.
I hate starting out on the wrong foot so I won't mention a thing about riding all my life, been around the lifestyle all my life, owned several Harleys over the years as well as jappers to....I won't even mention the fact that I am 50 years old and currently own a 95 FXDL I have owned since the crate boards were busted. I fondly call this ol' girl "Nell" which by the way has led me to this board.
I finally surrendered (or my aged bones rather) that it was time to get a couch. I had the gleem of a Ultra Classic in my eye but decided on the Screaming Eagle Ultra....
I spend the better part of 2 days calling different HD dealers around the country to see who is holding one or has one coming in un-claimed. Finally I hit on one that is some 350 miles away that says they will have the color I want by middle of the week. We discussed several issues and finally hit on a price.
Here is my question....I realize most HD dealers sell ALL Harleys at MSRP plus freight and prep. Several dealers I spoke with that WOULD NOT be getting a FLHTCUSE anytime soon claimed they sold others at MSRP plus freight and prep which was $31995.00, however the dealer I have made an agreement with has marked this bike up by $3000.00. When I asked why so much, their reply was the bikes are not far from being all out on the market, maybe 2000 of the 4000 to be built are sold. With the crunch coming in and the bikes getting rarer prices are going to go up.
Has anyone else been hit with a markup like this?
Do you buy what this "salesman" is telling me?
Next question is this....I asked him today if he could nail down from the Motor Company when she would ship and arrive. He tells me that HD has not made the VIN available yet so there is noway of tracking the shipping. He added it could be as late as middle of Next month.
Has anyone else who had to wait for the bike ran into this kind of information?
Thanks in advance..and thanks for all the informative post about this bike from you all. One comes to mind now..when mine does arrive I'll be checking her paint job with the eye of a jeweler!! :-)
Thanks Again,
Rusty

Hey Rusty!

Welcome to the best HD site on the net!  I am also new here as I have been the proud owner of my SE for just a month now.  I too decided late in the year that it was time to move on this model.  Had some cash that came available and I am getting no younger.  I had no luck at my local dealer, as they had sold out their 06 AND 07 allocation. But they are a great bunch there (Tilley HD, Statesville NC)  They did the legwork for me, however and found my bike at another dealer in Charlotte.  The dealer would not trade so I had to go there, but they held it for me.  The Tilley guys told me MSRP was as good as it gets on this model, so I called around myself.  I didn't find anything that was lower, and some as you say had a $1000-3000 premium.

My travels through the waiting period was similar.  Approx build date, then VIN, then ship confirmation, then THE CALL. My temp. dealer called me at each step and I believe the guy checked every day he worked.  The original ship date was beat by three days and I took delivery a couple days before the original promise.
Some guys have posted longer delays, up to a couple months, but it sounds like the delays are now gone.

Good Luck to ya, keep us posted on how things go.

BTW - what color?

I think the major delays are over with now.....as far as price, I had to shop around within my state to find someone who would sell me one at MSRP and not 1 or 2 thousand over, then narrowed it to one who would actually take a deposit and hold the bike for me when it came in.  A couple just said "if you can get here first after we call you, the bike is yours"...otherwise SOL. So, mines shipping on May 11....from what I've read here they can't track it until the MOCO enters the VIN number, and that doesn't happen until it gets put on the truck.

The local guys, within 10 miles of my house, wanted 2K over MSRP, so I'm traveling 250 miles to get mine, trailer it back home, then break it in.

Welcome to the site and hope you get what you want when you want it.

Rusty,
Welcome to the site.  I just took delivery of mine last Saturday, it shipped exactly one week after the scheduled ship date of 4/4.  The dealer should be able to give you a tentative ship date but, as TC said, when the VIN shows up in the system it's on the truck.
As far as price goes, there are dealers who will sell them at MSRP but you have to search for them.  I was lucky, I only had to go an additional 20 miles from the dealer closest to my house to find one that would.  By doing so, my new dealer has earned all my business instead of just the sale of the bike.  The 06's are getting close to being out of production, my dealer told me mine was the last haze they'd have.

Be thankful you aren't trying to buy a CUSE in Colorado Springs. They charge $6-7000 OVER MSRP !  Non SE bikes are $3000 over. >:( >:( >:( >:(
I went 65 miles north to Mile High HD in Aurora and paid $600 over MSRP. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I don't know if this is true for sure, but I heard Destination Daytona was paying other dealers over list and then selling them for $39,995.00  ..

Welcome seuceg,
In the eastern part of Virginia there are two main dealerships that each have sister dealerships not too far away. One dealership uses the computer and will take deposits for expected Screamin Eagle bikes.(as well as standard bikes) They can also search for a paticular bike you want.If it is a standard bike they may be able to work a trade to get it for you but no such luck on Screamin Eagle bikes. They sell them for MSRP plus setup and delivery fees. They are Bayside Harley in Portsmouth Va.I couldn't buy from them on my new bike because the first weekend Harley unvailed the FLHTCUSE folks went into Bayside and put down deposits for most of the year's alotments. They did help me locate bikes at other dealers and told me when their bikes were in so i could look at them before the owner's claimed them. If the owner backed out or if they were getting any at the end of the model year i had a chance with them to buy one.
The other dealership was Southside Harley in Virginia Beach Virginia. They had a call list that they put me on but would not accept a deposit to hold me a paticular bike. The owner would not release expected shipping dates to the salesmen or the customer so it was a stressful and anxious time of about 6 months but eventually my bike came in and i got it for MSRP plus shipping and setup. They treated me fairly and professionally I just wish I could have put down a deposit to lock in the sale.

thehaze...man, you are a lucky guy...around here, they sell 'em as soon as they hit the floor, if someone doesn't have a deposit on it already, and they get 2k over MSRP.  I was in the local dealer a month ago and they had just got one in (the color I wanted too), but the timing just wasn't right for me financially 'cause I was making some deals at work, so had to pass on that one...they sold it about an hour later.  Before that, I was in there and they had a Haze on the floor...that's what gave me the "bug" to get the SE...prior to that I was going to get a Street Glide and do a lot of stuff to it...they sold the SE while I was sitting on it for 2K over.  So, I feel lucky to have found a dealer who would do MSRP AND take a deposit to hold...he seems like a straight up guy, no haggling, just MSRP right off the bat. If he pulls anything, I'll probably come unglued!!!  I have e-mails to support our conversations, so I feel good about it, plus I've gotten good "vibes" from the guy, though I've never met him in person, just phone conversations.

Just rambling here.........

Got mine for MSRP at Lancaster HD, called around asking who had em, everybody around here said they either weren't selling em (the dealership owner buys all the SE's for himself, then sells em at inflated prices later) or were already spoken for.  Lancaster HD said the Haze and Crimson were spoken for, but not in yet, and they had an ugly green one in the crate that nobody wanted.  Told em I wanted to see it, they guy tells me it's still in the crate, I told em good, they've got 20 minutes to open it up. ;) Took one look at it and told em to put on a 6sp and the Bluetooth, let me know when it's ready and I'll pick it up.  Had in writing the price of the bike and the price of the added accessories, only variable was the labor for install on the Bluetooth, since they hadn't dealt with it yet, it took him nearly 5hrs to put in, but felt it would only take an hour now that he'd done it and only charge me an hour, the book evidently calls for 3 hours on the install, but they didn't get the book until after they'd done mine.  I have one of the first ones to come out, no waiting for it to arrive at the dealer, just had to wait a week for the 6sp and Bluetooth to come in.  Don't know if I could have done the wait thing, when I want something, I usually want it NOW.  [smiley=jalapeno.gif]  ;D

Keep checking around.  I got on a list with a MSRP dealer back in October (purchased my 03 Heritatge from them too).  Got a call just after Xmas but could not get in until the second week in January.  They held on to it so I could see the color with no pressure that they had people standing in line!
Took delivery at MSRP plus they threw in a second communications kit (it only comes with 1... go figure..)
Accross town, they add on healty fees to any bike... some people are just willing to pay it.

Good luck
