Would You Do It?
« on: March 06, 2011, 08:04:24 AM »

I got a call from my friend who I loaned money for him to floor plan some used Harley's last year. He is closing his dealership and I am getting a 2007 CVO Dyna with 4700 miles and is in perfect condition. The Indy North Harley dealer wants to take it and my 2009 Road King Classic in a trade for a just arrived CVO Ultra in the new Blue color. Would you do the deal for 4K and the two bikes? Would you retail the CVO Dyna and retail the King and then buy the 2011.5? Unfortunately I saw the Blue and relly like it!

If you look on NADA, it seems as though you are getting reasonable value for the two. I went from an 08 Ultra to the 11 SEUC. Rides better, takes the bumps better, gearing is better, seat is way better. Needs some work to cool it down ( they all do) but I'm sure glad I made the jump. Bet you will be too.

As long as you have a clear title for both bikes. Trading someone else's bike could be sticky.

In today's market if you can get a fair trade in price and are really wanting the bike the dealer has then perhaps I would do the deal, it all depends on the what your trade in could sell for locally.  I never trade in a motorcycle as I usually do way better selling outright and doing a cash deal with the dealer.

How accurate is NADA?
In my acknowledged limited experience (and personal opinion) I think it is on the low side for trade-ins.  And most dealers I've seen sure want to charge more than NADA when THEY are selling you a pre-owned bike.  They want to get it cheap and sell it high imo.  But that does not necessarily mean that you could do any better selling on your own.  It is a crap shoot.  And if your state allows trade-ins to offset the purchase price for sales tax purposes then that alone can save some serious coin.

I guess it partly depends on how long you have before you have to make the deal. It could take a few days or several months to sell your bikes retail. I don't think I would trade him two bikes and cash for the "Blue" one. I would probably want to just trade-in one bike and cash. Upgrading to the Ultra Blue would be a no brainer, just a question of what you want to pay. After six months of trying to sell my old 99 RKC I finally traded it in to purchase my 09SEUC. Which ever way you go you will love the Ultra.

The one thing people around here forget about is sales tax, I'm not sure what sales tax is like where your at buy it is ridiculous here. If your tax is close to ours you are looking at saving $2500 in tax money. That adds another $1250 on each bike. Just something to think about.

I'm going for the blue too.  I had considered trading my 09 CVO Fat Bob and my 09 Ultra Classic.  The dealer gave me a reasonable trade value on the Ultra Classic, but I felt like I got a real low ball on the CVO Fat Bob.  It sounds like they are giving you a reasonable trade value and if you only pay sales tax on the trade difference, you'll have a large savings there.  If you can sell one or both of your bikes and the dealer will do a courtesy trade for you, you'd get the best of both worlds.  The dealer takes your bike in on trade and transfers it to the new buyer, so you get the sales tax benefit and get something closer to retail for your bike.  You might end up paying another documentation fee with the dealer, but you'd still come out ahead.

Selling a bike can take time. How much is your time worth. Trading it in and you are on the new bike now. Also you don't have to worry about the buyer having any issues with a breakdown after buying the bike from you, if that should happen.

TRADE 'EM

We in California don't get that tax break others are speaking of but even without that I personally just HATE to sell vehicles .  All the looky loos, the having to stick aroud the house waiting for a call and then the negotiations.  Heck, trade it in, recognize you could have done $2 K better and move on.  It's time to ride.
