Nasty spark plugs
« on: March 09, 2011, 12:15:18 PM »

Got back yesterday from a 300 mile ride, high winds, up hills, running 80-85 (lousy gas mileage!).
Before my cam change (and map) the plugs were white white, now, more a light brown.
I'll do some "normal" riding this next couple days and take a look again, may lean it out a bit..

Tan is the colour you should be aiming for, white means your bike is too lean, black is to rich.

Just got back from the gas station ($4.11!!!) and checked mileage.......32mpg. not too bad considering the run yesterday.
Cruise was set, and no problems pulling the mountains. You could hear the motor working! :2vrolijk_21:
Thanks for the replies!

Plugs should look like toasted marshmallows.  Tan is nice!

Your plugs look just like they should.  Not too lean, not too rich.  I believe that Champion has a set of pictures on there website showing different sparkplugs in different conditions and describing what is causing each condition.  Your plugs would fall in the idea condition.

Sorry but I Have to chime in on this plug color. If you ran a old Shovel or Pan Head the color on your plug would be perfect because those older bikes had a terribly inefficient combustion chamber. EVO and Twin Cam engines have a very efficient combustion chamber and the plugs SHOULD have a white porcelain tip with a light gray halo or ring around the porcelain tip.....this is a perfect burn and the combustion chamber is burning all the fuel that is in the mixture. If the plug looks like yours you have WAY too much fuel in the mixture and the combustion is not burning it all. The Twin Cam engine should be getting 38 to 43 mpg if tuned properly.

Got to agree with Doc...  When your porcelain starts looking brown, it's running rich..
