Harley Trikes
« on: March 10, 2011, 07:24:45 PM »

I have a friend who's wife in exploring getting a trike.  Haven't found a nearby dealer with one in stock but one told her that the H-D factory trikes have some sort of stability control to prevent tip over.  I cannot find any information about this on the H-D website.  Does anyone know about this?  If this is correct is it on both the Ultra and the Street Glide trikes?

They also advise her they could do a trike conversion but I would be concerned about the implications on the factory warranty with an aftermarket conversion.

never heard of that option, could be the salesman trying just a little too hard to seal the deal LIKE LYING TO YOU to get you to sign on the dotted line.
but i could be wrong.

Works with the ABS, if it tips it brakes!

I don't know how far away you are from Maryville "Smoky Mountain HD" or Chattanooga "Thunder Creek HD" but I think they both have a trike in the showroom.

My Brother n law and sis have an 09 tri glide they have put about 35,000 miles on and they love it. He hasn't mentioned anything about stability control to prevent tip over, it does have a factory installed steering stabilizer/damper on it.

A few years ago, knew a guy that worked at a hd dealership that sold Lehman Trikes (Lehman's the one that helped harley come out with the tri glide). He said he actually tried to turn one over in the parking lot but due to the anti lean rear suspension couldn't
getter done. He said you'd sling yourself off before you could turn it over!! Maybe that's what he was referring to.

Excuse me for not knowing who the president of HD is, but when the Tri Glide was first released, I remember reading an article about the trike and it's release.

In that article it said that engineers had been pushing for a Trike for some time and the president would not OK it until it would skid out before it lifted a tire in a turn.  Nothing was said about traction control, but I would imagine that the way the bike is designed has a lot to do with the skid versus lift that eventually met with upper HD approval to go forward.

I've read a lot of information on trikes and I've not seen anything yet negative about the Tri Glide and its design and handling.

Of course anything can happen given the right circumstances, off camber turn, rough road surface, curbs etc, but in stock form and tires, it has been a very good performer for HD safety wise.

I would not be afraid to put my wife on one.  I would not say that with just any trike out there tough.  I heard and read about some that are very unstable.

Think they are confusing with the steering stabilizer, HD has it and on most aftermarket kit it's an option.  The HD trike is raked out a bit more also to help ease stearing.  My wife has an Ultra with the Motortirke kit.  Does not have the steering or rake.  You can tell a differene with this on it.  I test road a TriGlide and it's like power sterring vs. what we have.

If you decide to buy one, there are quite a few used ones on the internet
with very low mileage. Could save lots of green and still get what you want.
Oh, as far as tipping, or bringing a rear wheel off the ground, it can be done.
When they had demo rides, a friend of mine works for the MoCo, and he had to
stress to the people taking rides, to be careful! He also brought one up on two
wheels on a demo ride. I for one saw, it done in a parking lot.
I also think, he was trying to do it!

no trike, built by anyone Mfg has "stability control". As has been said, if you push any of the trikes you can flip one over, but you need to be trying to do it or just running way over you head and you will filp one.

each Mfg kit and Harley's will have it's own piont of tipping and sliding based on what rear end is under the trike.

Harley's do not have ABS.

they only one I know of that keeps the ABS working is from DFT.

When looking at a trike, you need to ride each one, for at least 10-15 miles and ride over RR tracks and pot holes, uneven pavement to know what that trike will be like.

Thanks all.   :2vrolijk_21:

I have never ridden a trike but am trying to help her and her husband sort through all the various options (and claims) to see what makes sense.  She has never ridden a bike - two or three wheeled and wants to make sure she makes the correct decision for her.

Hey Dean......where you been?  Haven't saw or heard from you in awhile.  Hope all is well for you.  That avatar pic of the 10 SEUC trike......is that yours or one of DFT's?

It's mine....it is a 2006 CVO, now has 26,000 miles it, been cross the US cost to cost three times just keeps running fine. Put one new belt on it last year after it took a rock that went all the way in and out of it! Put and good size hole in it.

I read all the post each day and just do not jump in on many, fun to read them all and know what you guys are up to.

I just can't stress enought that on this trike buying deal, no matter what anyone buys, they need to ride them all to know how they ride and than buy one.

just to let a little "out of the bag", so many have bought the Harley trike and just can't stand the ride, so stiff, rides like a truck, that we are just about to release a kit to put IRS under the Harley. It will use a lot of the stock parts from the bike (body, fenders, wheels pully, reverse ect) just a bolt on kit.
