Colored dot location using Dyna Beads?
« on: March 13, 2011, 01:53:35 PM »

I brought both rims to the HD dealership and had two new tires installed.  I told them not to bother balancing them because I was having excellent results using the Dyna Beads.  The manual and most tire experts recommend that the colored dot should be located near the valve stem.  The front was mounted OK but the rear was off.  Will this matter if I'm using the beads.  Next time I'm going to have then balanced just in case I have a bad tire or it needs too many weights to be balanced correctly, then I will remove the weights and install the beads.  I promised myself I would not go back to the dealer, but if I have to have the tire dot aligned, I will.

Thanks,

Ray G.

The dot is the heaviest part of the tire, it is lined up with the stem to make it take less weight. If you are using beads should not effect it.

The beads aren't magic, and they won't make up for severe imbalance (read their own literature).  So yes, it could make a difference depending on how much imbalance you have.  Regardless, it is proper procedure to line the mark up with the valve stem, and the dealer should have done so no matter if you were having them balance the tire & wheel or not.  Have them do it right.  It won't take much to line it up; you could do it yourself if you have a lift to get the tire off the ground.  And if they pay that little attention to detail, you might want to verify your belt tension and rear axle torque while you have the tire off the ground.

btw, how far off are you talking about?  A couple inches one way or the other isn't normally worth messing with.

Had in depth discussions with tire manufactures while in Daytona on bead balancing

the consensus is to have the rim and rotors balanced with weights and install and epoxy the weight inside the rim........this will also tell you if the rim and/or rotors are out of balance

it will not matter where the dot is installed if the above is done. Install the type of balancing beads you wish to install.....

Depending on how out of balance the tire is will determine at what speed the beads balance out the combination. You could still have a vibration untill that speed is acquired.

The interesting part is that the Michelin 18 wheeler has golf balls in the steering tires only

Since I haven't installed the tire or the beads yet,  I'll just bring the wheel back to the dealer and have the colored dot lined up properly.  BTW Jerry if the Dot was another 6 to 7 inches farther away they would be 180 degrees off.

Thanks for the help.

The service department remounted my tire today and actually apologized for the incident.  Case closed.
