Question on extended warranty and mod's
« on: March 14, 2011, 01:01:28 AM »

Broke down and put a deposit on a new FLHXSE2, never been an extended warranty person, but thinking twice about one now. If I do engine mods, tuner, exhaust, etc, will it void the warranty? What about if I want to upgrade the cams or high comp pistons? I know I am going to want to open this thing up.....

Thanks,

Scott

There are numerous threads here about the good and bad of the extended service plan.  The short answer to your question though is yes, all the mods you talked about, will technically void the warranty and any ESP you buy for that particular modded area of the bike (i.e., non factory cams will technically void any warranty for the cams, or any parts that are associated with the cams).  However, the dealer/MoCo has to prove that the mods you did caused the failure, before declining warranty/ESP work.  If you have a stand up dealer and they do the mods for you, chances are there will never be an issue and they'll cover warranty/ESP work.  (Can't say the same about other dealers though if you break down on the road.)

First, you need to be aware of the differences between factory warranty and ESP.  No matter what folks like to call it, the Extended Service Plan is NOT an extension of the factory warranty, it's a service contract and as such it comes with it's own set of rules which are spelled out in the contract.  Any questions concerning coverage should be addressed to the administrator of the ESP, and I wouldn't just take the word of the guy trying to sell you the plan since we all know how accurate those discussions tend to be.

Obviously, nonstandard parts will not be covered under the factory warranty.  Further, if your nonstandard parts cause a failure to other parts, those will also not be covered.  Federal warranty law requires the warrantor to prove that your modification was the proximate cause of the failure, however, before they can legally deny coverage.  When you start talking about the ESP, however, the federal law does not apply.

In practice, most folks don't have a problem if the mods are limited to the basics like lower restriction intake and exhaust plus a tune.  When talking about major infusions of power, with headwork, cams, added displacement, etc., then you might find yourself fighting a losing battle.  Yes, some dealers will look the other way and still submit the claims as if the bike were stock.  But that isn't a given, and if your dealer won't do so you would have no legal basis to fight him.

Caveat emptor.

Congratulations on the new ride......I don't think you'll look back.

You've been on this forum for five years.....you know what our experience is here in Nor Cal regarding mods and warranty or ESP (extended warranty?).

We didn't bump compression but both the wife and I have had warranty work done on our motors and we both have mods and that was never brought up.  On my wife's bike, at 30k + miles they replaced my wifes motor.  When the new motor arrived they took the cams and adjustable pushrods out of the old motor and put them in the new motor.

Before you bump compression or to heavy of mods, you might want to consider the lower end work to be able to handle what you're doing up top.

One thing to keep in mind is that no matter how good your dealer is if you have extensive repairs to be covered (hopefully) by either the factory warranty or an ESP it is possible (and maybe even probably) that they will send in a field rep to inspect before they authorize repairs.  If it is minor - like a starter or maybe stator then most likely no big deal.  But major engine or drive train component failure would, I think, stand a much greater likelihood of being inspected.
