Trailer Safety Chain Length?
« on: March 17, 2011, 08:52:48 AM »

Is there any standard length your safety chains should be?  If they are to tight they'll bind in turns but if they are to loose the trailer would drop to the ground if it ever got disconnected from the hitch.

Just loose enough so that trailer doesn't bid in turns.  Next to impossible to keep a trailer from hitting the ground if it comes off the hitch.  Keep in mind the purpose of the chain is to keep the trailer attached to the bike, not keep it off the ground.

Make sure the chains cross each other to form a "basket" to catch the trailer tung. Also, as one member here found out the hard way, if you have a bustec hitch, Make sure you have a third chain to the bike in case the receiver is not installed properly.  :(

Roger has made a very good point.  My boat trailers both came with a single chain as did both Bushtec's.  I learned in the boating class about crossing the chains and had an extra chain put on all of them from that point on (except my last Bushtec.....didn't have it long enough).

I hope you never have the experience of needing the safety chain....especially on a bike. :2vrolijk_21:
