HWY 1 - 40 ft section gone
« on: March 17, 2011, 06:35:52 PM »

BIG SUR (CBS/AP) – A stretch of California’s coastal highway is closed to traffic indefinitely after a chunk of the road fell into the Pacific Ocean.
State transportation workers are scrambling to repair Highway 1 in Monterey County near Rocky Creek Bridge. A 40-foot section of the two-lane highway crumbled just after 5 p.m. Wednesday following several days of rainy weather.

All of the southbound lane is gone, and the soil under the northbound lane also is giving way. The California Highway Patrol says no one was injured in the slide. It’s not immediately clear what caused the slide or how long the highway will be closed.

A lot of you have probably ridden across this bridge, or seen pics of it, awesome scenery. Hope they get it fixed before our spring starts here!  :nixweiss:

A bunch of us were just through there last Saturday! The report I heard said that they had no estimate for repair \ reopening the road.

The 40-foot stretch of highway tumbled down the hillside at 5:10 p.m., after several days of heavy rains in the area, authorities said. Caltrans closed several miles of the road south of Garrapata State Park and posted signs warning motorists of the washout.

The agency expected a long-term road closure to conduct repairs.

No more Arnold (Awwn old). Jerry Brown will handle it.

Let's hope they don't keep it a single lane with a traffic signal for two years.

Yea, it gets cold here.....down around the 30s and 40s.  The lows can get down to the high 40s in July along the coast, Monterey area.  A bit chilly if you don't have the heated gear. :nervous:

That heated gear is great, unless it shorts out and burns you on the stomach.  :D
