Painted mirrors & helmets
« on: May 24, 2004, 11:42:46 PM »

I thought I would post some of the things I have done to my SEEG, other than the lockable lowers.
To start with I had my fairing mount mirrors and helmets painted to match the paint on the SEEG. Here are some pics of the results.  The helmets need to go back for the light blue flames after they cure.  They are due back in for the finishing touch next week.

Welcome to the forum Mark.  I will try and answer your questions.

Re the paint - I had 2 different paint shops match the cobalt blue & black paint.  One shop did the mirrors and some work on engine parts, another did some work on a  custom king tourpak.  In both cases I never gave them a paint code but they may have gotten one from the dealer.  In both cases I gave them a factory painted piece (side panel) to ensure a match.  It shouldn't be any problem for a decent painter to do a match for you but I will ask the painters I used if they have any further info that would help you.

Re the Intercom - I posted a review of the product (Baher) in a seperate thread on this forum titled "You can have intercom"
http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=eg_gen;action=display;num=1086143344;start=

I am still very happy with the performance of the intercom unit and am considering changing out an Autocom system that I have installed on another bike for the Baher.

Re Heated Grips - The grips are completely internally wired.  I believe you will find several threads that discuss in detail how to internally wire the HD grips, both on this forum, the Electra Glide Garage - http://forums.delphiforums.com/electraglide1/start, and the V-Twinforum - http://65.38.172.84/forums/index.php?.  I wont bother to repeat what these threads already talk about except for one thing.  I routed the wiring from the left side grip that would go to the power source through the grip housing where you see a rubber plug, and into the bars via the switch housing.  I notched the inside ring of the switch housing to accomodate the extra wiring and left enough slack both under the fairing where the wires exit the bars and from grip to grip to allow for removal of the grip if need be.

Hope this helps.  Let me know if you need anything else & I will try to answer any other questions you have.

DARRELL,
THANKS FOR RESPONDING SO QUICKLY.I DON'T KNOW IF I WAS LUCKY OR YOU ALWAYS CHECK THE SITE.YOU DEFINETELY HAVE BETTER PAINTERS THAN ME.MY GUY HAS BEEN GIVING ME EXCUSES FOR 2 MONTHS.I DID SEE YOUR INTERCOM POSTING BUT DIDN'T RECHECK THAT IT WAS YOU.YOUR DESCRIPTION OF THE MODIFICATION SOUNDS DETAILED ENOUGH THAT I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT. AT LEAST I KNOW IT CAN BE DONE.I COULD NOT FIND THE INFO IN THE THREADS YOU GAVE ME-THAT'S JUST ME-I'M NOT TOO COMPUTER FRIENDLY.I HAVE SEEN THE POSTS ABOUT THE HEATED GRIPS THOUGH.THE ONE I SAW THE GUY SAID HE JUST LEFT THE WIRING ON THE OUTSIDE AND I DIDN'T WANT TO DO THAT.I'LL GET BACK TO YOU IF I NEED HELP.
THANKS AGAIN,MARK [smiley=laugh.gif]

Mark, if you do decide to proceed with an intercom unit, regardless of what manufacturer, let me know & I will give you a tip on how to install the speakers in your helmet to get maximum sound quality and comfort.

Darrell,  I also have an 03 Ultra that I use helment speakers/intercom with.  The sound quality is poor with the HD set.  Tell me your secret!

Darrellh,

Did you get Doug  at Alyth or Crossed Eye to match and paint your helmet?

DarrellH the mirrors and helmet look nice.  I was going to us the fairing mirrors till I sat on a buddys bike and all I saw was my elbows.  They look so much better than the arm sticking up.  HarleyMark1966 welcome to the site you will find a great group of people here who have a wealth of knowledge that love to share it.

Geezerglide, I used Doug for the work on the king tourpak and mirrors, Guy at Cyclemania for the helmets & engine pieces.  Both do good work.  Both have done & are doing some work for me now on my other bikes and have never disappointed me.  I have not used Crosseyed yet.

Mr Magoo I have heard others complain of the same thing re the mirrors but I have never had a problem.  I find I get much more visibility from the fairing mirrors than I did from the stock mirrors.  I know some have mounted them 1/4 - 1/2 inch further out (from where H/D say to mount them) to solve the problem you had, but I have never tried it.

Mrs. WeCVO - nice to hear that you have escaped the frigid Canadain winter, I envy you.  You are right we have way too much non-riding time up here which gives us plenty of time to create and tinker with our bikes, which for me anyway is the next best thing to riding.  But that gets to be expensive and cuts into the beach vacation time.  So I am trying to restrain myself this winter from modding bikes and spend more time down south.  A trailor is in the works so that I can escape this horrible cold & white $hit.

I posted my speaker tip in a new thread called "Helmet Speaker Solution" for those who are interested.
