SERK07 - Handling like a big fat whale!!!
« on: March 21, 2011, 02:32:30 PM »

Hi All

Need some advice

Got a SE Road King on an 07 plate that has, since the rear end of last summer not been handling quite right.

Hard to describe, but something similar (I can only imagine) like going round a corner with the back wheel slightly loose or with the tyre flat. Whilst riding straight, it seems more wallowy than usual and every twitch of my arse sends it wobbling.

It's a pre 'stiffened frame tourer' so a little prone, but I fitted a touring link which made it much much better. However, it now feels worse that before the touring link was fitted.

Now for some details.

Touring link still attached and all looks well
Avon tyres front and back - replaced last years and 1000's of miles left in them.
All wheels nuts are tight.
Tyre pressures fine.
Wheel bearings checked on OK
Head stock bearings replaced end of last summer (just in case)

Does anyone have any experience of this? Any ideas on what it could be? Feeling quite depressed about it and not sure what to do next

Cheers

How did it handle BEFORE the Avon tires?

Hi
The dunlop tyres were great and that was before the progressive touring link.
The first lump of mileage I did on the Avon's was also great with and without the touring link.
I can pretty much pin point the first time I felt it deteriorating which was a run back from London along the M4 in August last year and seems to be getting steadily worse.
Any ideas?
Thanks

How many miles are on your SERK?  Is it due for front fork service?  Stock rear shocks?  I would guess something is either worn out or broken.  I've seen bikes do strange things with one blown rear shock..

Good Luck

Hi
The bike has got 25k miles on the clock. They harley chap that did the steering head bearing and races, also check the front forks. And put me new front wheel bearings in so all, hopefully, should be ok on the front end.
Yes, the rear shocks are standard. Have check the psi in the rear shocks and it seems to be holding air fine. If one of the shocks has 'gone' how am I able to check? What should I be looking for?
Cheers

On my 04 and 05, the front lower motor mount breaking caused the handling to go to chit.  I am not sure if you have the same mount or not but it is something to look at.

I would still suspect the tires after you check ALL the other common things like motor mounts, alignment, etc etc. :nixweiss:

Might want to include the swing arm bushings in there as something to look at/replace.

Thanks everyone.

It'll keep me busy at the weekend!  ;D

Have been looking at Sta-Bo or the Glide Pro system. Any one had any experience of either of these or any equivalents??

Cheers

I was interested in the Glide Pro kit until the first time I saw a bike with it installed.  It may perform as advertised but with it installed you can't align the drivetrain.
