Passenger audio socket/Tour Pak lamp
« on: April 23, 2006, 06:08:16 PM »

The socket for the passenger to plug their headset into just doesn't seem right on my bike!  Unlike my previous Ultras, the split-ring bracket for it is fitted at a wierd angle, which keeps the socket tucked in close to the seat - it doesn't even look right.  With that, it will be well nigh impossible for the mrs to plug in while on the bike, made even worse by the fact that I'm sure the cable run has to be wrong.  Can one of you guys have a look at yours and tell me how the cable runs, with respect to the amp unit under the Tour Pak please?  My cable is trapped securely by the amp (it runs along the top of the amp) and will not move on the spring.  Surely that's not right?  If it meant to be pinched hard in place, there's no need for the spring at all....

Also, the LED light in my Tour Pak doesn't seem to come on; does it need anything in particular switched on to make it work?  (ignition? Aux switch?)  I guess I'm asking what switches it.  I did take out the liner from the Tour Pak to make sure it was plugged in to the harness, and it is of course.

Looks like the guys alredy helped you out with the light. Let me see if I can help with the other issue. IT SUCKS! Does that answer it for you? If seems that the MoFoCo changed the design on the tourpak and speaker pod, changed the rear amp and how it mounts and never changed the rear headset plug. They even put the spring there, although it does no good. I may offer a word of caution, that stupid little plug scratched the hell out of my saddlebag lid, so be carful!

Anyway, I am in the middle of designing a new way to go for the rear headset plug. I will post pics when I come up with something. In the mean time, just have fun playing with the tourpak light.    [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Thanks for the help with the light guys! Duh!  Guess I'm stoopid! :-)

But I can't believe the headset socket is meant to be like that.  I mean, why have the spring when the cable is jammed solid?  Looks like a Saturday afternoon redesign is called for!

You ain't alone - they're all that way.  One problem is that the rear speaker pods are bigger than on the regular Ultra - I guess because we've got the premium audio.  And the aux amp just complicates things more.  What I did was remove the speaker to get to the nuts on the bolts holding the bracket for the passenger audio.  Then I drilled a new hole so I could re-position the bracket at about a 45 degree angle pointing to about 10 o'clock as you sit on the bike.  That did help.  I also relocated the spring to attach to the right side of the license plate.  Then enclosed the spring in 3/4" plastic split flex tubing so it will not rub the rear fender.  This is about as good as I could get it.  In my never to be humble opinion they should permanently mount the plug in the speaker enclosure and forget about this darn setup they currently use.  What they have definitely sucks big time.

It's a case of "It's good enough" Instead of designing something that would work since the addition of the amp under the tour pak won't allow the plug to work as it was designed for the standard Ultra. Hell the price tag was only $32000 what do you want???? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I dream of buying one for $32000! We pay $40250 or thereabouts! :-)

I think I can make it work better, once I get a chance to experiment.  I'll do it when I get all the parts I need to move the number plate to up where the US models have it.  I take the ugly braket that the spring is also attached to off to get it black powder coated, so that will be the ideal time.

Don't have one, but thought came to mind when you asked this. You may already have it on, but if not try turning switch to on position and trying light. It might be wired to ignition someway to prevent running the battery down if light was inadvertently left on. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

It's wired where it can be turned on anytime.

You know after I posted this I thought to myself that would defeat the MoCo purpose in selling batteries. ::)

Yea, thanks for trying! I'll be taking it in for the 1000 mile maintenance and Dyno tune in a week anyway.
