2009 cvo roadglide suspension help!!!
« on: March 23, 2011, 09:33:36 PM »

My buddy has a 2009 cvo Roadglide that he loves...  except for the suspension....     He complains of bottoming out when he and his girlfriend ride (hes not an aggressive rider)...  hes 150 pounds she approx 125.

He says everytime he hits a bump it goes right up his spine.  Which aftermarket suspension would you guys recommend?  He was thinking of a set from progressive...  with maybe adding a touring "plush" seat for when he rides with a passenger.

Any other specific products I can get some advice on would be great!!!

Thanks

If you want a *PREMIUM* ride -- the best that it gets on Harley touring bikes, tell him to call Traxxion Dynamics (see the vendor area of this board for a possible discount arrangement). They are outside Atlanta and are miracle-workers for Harley suspension. Get Traxxion Dynamics front suspension upgrade and the Bitubo shocks for the rear. It'll set you back a few $$$ (about $2200, if I remember correctly), but it's worth it if he's going to be riding a lot, especially two-up.

Just my $0.02...

Did you ask your friend whether he adds air to the shocks when his girlfriend rides??  Based on the weight numbers you gave, he should be riding at about 40 - 42 pounds when she rides too.  Rick gives one of several good options for a "premium " ride but I doubt a conservative rider needs that.  Also check that the shocks are not leaking.

He has played with all different air pressure in shocks.... Shocks are not leaking..... just talked to him about the previous recomendation and he only wants to spend 1k tops on a new suspension...  I know you get what you pay for.....

Have em try Progressive Mono Shocks up front, less than $300.

For the rear either:
H D Premium Ride Hand-Adjustable Low Ride Shocks (on the SESG) for less than $500 or
WORKS Performance Street Trackers w/Dual-Rated Springs and BARS for less than $600.

Got that Mono tube/H D hand adjustable on the SESG2, rides good, takes a lot to bottom out. However I have the Mono tube/Works set up on my 08 SERK. She's a sweet ride. FWIW.

Lots of good suspension options out there.  I too hated the stock air shocks the 2009 SERG, but did not want to drop $2K + on Traxxion Dynamics setup.  Not saying the TD set up is not good, just to pricey for me.  I ended up going with Ricor Intiminators for the front, and Ricor's Touring Inertia Active Suspension for the rear.  The front end was much improved from the get-go, with a better overall riding feel, especially going over bumps / dips in the road, with much less front end brake dive.  The rears took some seat time to get them dialed in to my riding style, and set up.  Once we found the sweet spot with these adjusable shocks, it has made my riding experience much more pleasurable, and they are a huge improvement over the stock crap that HD puts on these bikes.  Brian over a Ricor is a stand up guy, and will work with you to make sure you understand the shock, ( how the IAS works,)and will work with you to make sure you get the tune right for you.  I enjoy riding the SERG so much more with the Ricor set up.

I can understand not really liking the stock setup but the way you describe it makes me think that there is a problem. Is there any way either he could take another buddies SERG for a ride or have somebody ride his that is familiar with the SERG? I realize that I have the SERGU but even when I had the 03 RoadGlide I didn't have these problems. My weight is ~260 ish, and my BSR is about.... well more then his BSR. Unless he is packing lead in his bags I don't see how he could be bottoming out if everything is working properly. Running the older pillow top seat from the Standard / Ultra will make for a better ride when touring with out a doubt.

If he's putting that much air in the shocks, I seriously doubt he is bottoming out.  A more likely case would be that the shocks are SO POOR on these bikes, and the front end suspension as well, that it FEELS like he is bottoming out when going over those sharp edged bumps in the road that are everywhere I've ever ridden.  The compression damping in the stock suspension is so bad that the suspension cannot react to those sudden changes/input.  That goes for both the front and rear.  All the air does in the rear is provide additional "preload" to the shock where it won't bottom out, but in doing that, it makes the shock feel really "stiff", like it has a super duper heavy spring.  The cheap way to do suspension on a bike is to have simple holes in diaphrams within the shock or front suspension, in addition to a POS spring in each fork leg...the suspension oil must be squeezed through these orfrices, and neither the oil or the size/action of the entire set up can react quickly enough to absorb those sharp edged bumps (like the ones where the road meets a bridge)...in other words, only a certain amount of oil can be forced through the holes...it works OK on dips in the road surface, but can never react well to sudden changes.  In fact, once you put on decent shocks and rebuild the forks with SOMETHING better, even if it's just a better emulator, you'll realize just how much the front tire is skipping around on the road surface...not maintaining constant contact.  This can make for a giant pucker factor if you encounter rub board type pavement in the middle of a curve.  Traxxion Dyamics AK 20 cartridges are the very best solution for the front end, but it is relatively expensive...the Progressive Monotubes/new springs are probably the next best, though I have no personal experience with them yet...and new/different emulators coming in a distant 3rd.  I have no vested interest in Traxxion Dynamics products, other than knowing they are the best, and the components are machined in house to extremely high tolerances (the AK 20 cartridges).  Traxxion also offers a compromise...they can rebuild the forks with better springs, and a far better emulator, with the proper fork oil.  They are also excellent folks to deal with, and really know their chit, coming from a racing background.  If you live anywhere within riding distance of Atlanta, it's the best money you'll ever spend on your 30K plus motorcycle.

On the other hand, folks don't think a thing about spending 2K+ on the HP/TQ quest, like cams, trying several exhaust systems, tuning devices, etc, etc, etc to make the bike go faster in a straight line, but will balk at spending 2K on suspension to get the power you already have down on the pavement at all times, and be SAFER in the process.  Most HD owners don't really know they have chitty suspension, as they've never had anything really good to compare to.  :soapbox:  Same used to be true with HD brakes, but they finally got around to putting something decent on the bike to stop the damn thing.

part of the suspension problems on a FLTRSE3 is the low profile tires, not much options there for now. i have the ak-20 traxxion with 300mm bitubos on my serg. really sweet. :2vrolijk_21: ought to be for 22 hundred +. :o   on my 08 i went with progressive mono tubes and 12.5" progressive 440hd. this is a really nice combo. i do have 90 series tires on the 08.

dollar wise the mono tubes is the best upgrade one can choose in suspension,  the rear needs to be upgraded too, lots of options there. JMO

good luck

My buddy contacted progressive and this is what they said.........

"Unfortunately I do not have the specs for your bike to confirm whether your shocks are 12.5” or 13”.  For what you’re looking to do, I would recommend our 430 Series shocks.  We have them available in different lengths for your bike.  Also with your weight, they will give you a plusher ride compared to other shocks.  Another great feature is that they have a threaded preload adjuster, so you can fine tune the ride however you want it.  One thing to keep in mind also, is they come with a lifetime warranty.  So if something happens 10 years down the road, it won’t cost you anything to repair them."

What do you guys think of this recomendation???

Thanks so much for all the input!!!

You ask 10 different people and you will get 10 different answers. Most will be a vast improvement
over the stock garbage they call suspension on these bikes.

I also did not want to spend a fortune on suspension, so I bought the Progressive Monotube
cartridge inserts for the forks and a set of the new Progressive 940 touring shocks. The
ride was greatly improved and my wife said it was the single best thing I had done to the
bike. I spent about 750.00 and it was worth every penny. :2vrolijk_21:

So true plenty of opinions out there.    Checkout the thread from last year on the subject too - I had same issue as you & love my rear shock decision - see it at the previous thread, the subject line last year was:  Topic: Best shocks for 09 SERG
Type the subject line of last years post  "Best shocks for 09 SERG" in the search pane to find it.
Then Call HD-Dude (Jim) he'll take good care of you @ Metal Dragon ph. (510) 885-9471 :2vrolijk_21:

I also recommend Howard at Motorcycle Metal  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

Last summer I had the same problem with my 09 SERG and almost lost my "Better" half when we hit a bump  ::)  Called Howard and he set me up with a set of Olin's, put them on and after a minor adjustment I never had to adjust them again.  Usually ride two up 30% of the time and the bike handle great !!!  :bananarock:  Check out his web site and give him a call it will be the best $700 you spend  ;)
