Cruise control
« on: March 28, 2011, 11:57:05 AM »

Need some advice.  I have and 010 SE%, and periodically the cruise control will just stop working.  The dash indicator turns from  green to amber, and it will not reset.  I have tried shutting off the rocker switch, and trying to rest it but will not come back.  The only thing that works is to shut the ignition off and turn it back on then it starts working again.  I have checked the brake switch, and it is not causing the problem.  Happens very intermittently so I can't duplicate the problem on demand so I can trouble shoot the problem.  I have the PCV  installed.  Have had the Power Commander on the bike for the last 25,000 miles with no issues.   Any ideas, the dealer who did the install of the power commander, and services the bike is willing to help, but hard to fix something that is never broken when I bring the bike in for them to look at.

Take it to the dealer and they will replace the switch (may not be the correct term) in the handlebar that is most likely shorting out (periodically). Happened to me on my last 2 scoots.

Your problem is in the PCV. Did this problem start after updating the firmware? I had the same problem on my 2009. You'll also notice 6th gear indicator stops working at the same time.

Mine did start acting up after a firm ware upgrade to the PCV, but the gear indicator is still working.  What ever it is it rests as soon as I switch the ignition off and back on.  Just turning the cruise control switch off and back on has no effect.

Set the firmware back to the previous one and you'll be back in business.

The firm ware update solved a problem I was having with a very intermittent miss I had.  The bike would run great, then it would miss, just once, but a odd times, some times every 500 to 1000 miles.  Felt like it just quit, for and instant then back on. no other problem.  Very disconcerting.  The cruise issue came after this problem went away, but seems to just as random.  Even had it not want to reset after I had been using it a few minutes before.  Always comes up working if I shut the ignition off and turn it back on.  Not the thing to be doing when cruising along the interstate at 70 mph.  I will be going back to the dealer soon to have the rear tire changed, and see if he can help.

Your dealer won't be able to do anything, I'd be calling the guys at Power Commander

Ok had it at the dealer, and he now seems to think it is a bad wire or connector.  I did call Power Commender and their advise was it was the ECM.  I will be taking it back to the dealer as soon as he can get me in.  The dealer is trying, but says he has never seen this exact symptom before.  No codes were set.  I don't understand how a wire or connector problem could be the problem as it always rests with the ignition switch or kill switch.  Yesterday it quite 10 times in 100 miles.  Everything else works and no indication of a problem with anything else.  He did mention today that it could even be a problem with the turn signal controller.  Says he has never had and ECM go bad, in his years of experience.

unplug the PCV and you'll see the problem is gone. I went through this with my 09. My healer wasted all kinds of time and even through a few parts at it to try to make me happy, but it turned out to be the PCV

You've been given some good advice by jagerbomb.  Disconnect the PCV and see what happens.

As for what the folks at PowerCommander told you, if you do some research you will find that they had similar answers for folks with problems in the past, only to later find that they had forgotten to include a circuit in their harness for the function being discussed at that time.  So they and their tech responses are definitely not infallible.

A basic diagnostic procedure that has always worked for me only requires a decent memory and decent skills of observation.  At what point did the problem become evident?  What did you do to the bike right before the problem became evident?  Work backward and prove or eliminate each item as a cause.  In this case, you've said the problem started right after you did a firmware update.  Sounds like a very logical place to start IMHO.

Since it is now failing in a relatively short amount of time (10 times in 100 miles), it shouldn't take long with the PCV disconnected to prove or disprove the theory.

I have never disconnected the PC, is there any problem doing this, or permanent change that will have to be corrected.  I do not have the current map for the PC?

Unhooking the Power Commander won't remove the map that is in the Power Commander.  You plug it back in later and take off as you had before.  The only difference will be that the bike is running only on whatever tuning calibration is in the stock ECM.  Just like before the Power Commander was installed.  If there is any question of a Power Commander related issue the simplest, cheapest and an easy troubleshooting exercise is to just unhook the thing and run without it.  Depending on which version of the Power Commander you're using there might be changes to undo at the o2 sensors also.
