Envelope LED Light
« on: April 04, 2011, 06:19:14 PM »

Went for a ride with my buddy's yesterday and half way threw the ride i was told that my rear RH LED tail light was not working. To make a long story short i confirmed that it was the light by plugging in my amber one that came with the bike. (I switched to the U.S. smoked ones)I thought these LED's where to last a very long time if not the life of the bike. Took it back to the dealer today and with no questions asked another one was ordered and i should have it by Thursday.

Has anyone else had a light go so quickly and how long do they last or was this just a fluke. Funny thing is I replace the front, left orange turn signal bulb last week. Better i get the bugs out now i guess.

Lost my left rear on the Az. ride.  The dealership has ordered a new one today. :nixweiss:

I've had each go out on mine. When the left side was in short supply I ordered one from another dealer just to get on the road. So I have a spare left side. And just as a side note; it's not (usually) the actual LED that fails; its the driver electronics in most cases.

In my case, I can still get it to work if I wiggle and play with the plug.  The tech. told me that it was one of the male pins on the plug. :nixweiss:

Had the left side go out on my way home on the day I bought the bike!! Went right back to my dealer, had one in stock, was back on the road in 45 min. He did confirm it was the electronic board that went bad. Have had no problems since... hold on let me knock on this wood desk!

Mano, how did you Order the US smoked rear turn signals, living here in Canada? Were you able to do it through your dealership? Thanks.

I ordered them from a dealership here in Toronto. I wanted to install them ASAP because i could not stand looking at the amber ones. If you can make your way to a Harley dealership in the U.S. you can get them for about $110 to $120 less EACH.  Takes about 5 min to do the re and re. 3 screws and the electrical plug. If you are going to do it get the smoked pig nose also. The bike will look much better. :2vrolijk_21:

I forgot to metion that they put a rush on my light and it arrived yesterday. I had my bike at the dealer for the 1st 1600km service so they installed it for me. Some advise. If you do buy the smoked lights hold onto your amber ones. If you have to you can swap the smoked lens for the amber lens giving you  extra lights if needed in the future and saving you the $$$$ of having to buy new.

Yesterday I had a friend tell me during our ride that my RH taillight was not working . This morning I removed the saddlebag, unplugged the socket and first checked the plug to see if it was hot by turning on  the key and using a test light to check each terminal. Blue is running lights, brown is brake, and orange/yellow is turn. They all were hot. I then  removed the orange lock plate from the male connector, and applied some silicone  based dielectric compound(grease) to each of the female connectors inside the male plug. I then plugged it back in and it worked perfectly. I repeated the same process on the other side. I will let you know if this stays fixed. The plugs were put together dry from the factory and I assume they just vibrate and don't make good connection sometimes. I have read several posts here where some peoples lights did not work consistently and the dealerships are replacing the taillight or saying the electronic board was not working. Not at all sure this is the case. Anyway this procedure fixed mine at least for now and has saved me a trip to the dealership. Hope this is all it needs.

@plasmadaddy

The part numbers for the smoked envelope lights are as follows:

left side: 69383-09
right side: 69407-09

price around 130 dollars in a shop with discount!

Dont forget to change the taillight to the smoked pig nose.

Check out www.badlandmotorcycleproducts.com and their RADIANTZ series of taillights. :cucumber: :cucumber: :pepper: :pepper:

Ask for Dan, he knows what we need here in Europe. He was very helpful and their customer service is excellent. ::) ::) ::) ;D
