Detachable Tour-Pak Owners - is movement normal?
« on: April 05, 2011, 06:36:24 PM »

I put a detachable King TP on the SESG2 and noticed that there is ~1/8" of play on the rear mount when attached. Makes the TP "bounce" going down the road - looks kinda cheesey (imho). I can lift the rear of the TP from the bottom and recreate the play. I had a stealth rack on the SESG and remember it being SOLID when mounted - thought it odd that the TP would have play in the mount.

Is the play normal or do I have a bad dock or detach mount? I've check the detach mount and both are fully seated and closed yet the play remains.

Anyone?

I have the older style but they move around quite a bit, especially once the rubber bushings start wearing.

According to the site, these stainless bushings fix the free play. They are on the bottom of the page.

That is what I was expecting as well.
I'll have to dig in a little bit to see which side has the play and where it is.

Mine and my wife's doesn't either.  Where is the play....between the tour pack and the mount or between the mount and the docking hardware?

Just went and checked. The play occurs between the rear articulating lock tabs and the bushings. Right side has much more play than the left. Either the OD of the bushings are smaller than they should be, or the thickness of the locking tabs is less than they should be.

Unfortunatley - any existing play will obviously cause the the locking tabs and bushings to wear out quickly due to constant side-to-side (bounce) of one part against the other.

Guess I'll have to take it in and have them look at it ... but the phrase "They all do that" is what is coming to mind  ;)

Mine is solid no movement 2009 SERG. There is a little vibration but that is in my lid.

I had a detachable tour pak on my 08 SG. It eventually got loose after about 40000 miles of pot holes. I wish I had known of those solid mounts.

My tour pak and passenger back rest are very solid - for now - on the '09 SERG. I expect them to develop the "bounce" you describe w/ more wear like what happened on my '05 although they remain solid after 20 some thousand miles. I replaced the worn nylon mounts on the '05 and all was good again. If you've never used yours and it bounces right off the bat I'd say something's amiss. They DON'T all do that.
BTW, I'm assuming that you've got the plastic liners fitted into the "fork" end of the detachables. Is your detachable passenger backrest solid or does it wiggle up and down as well? Last thought is that there was trouble w/ fit reported on some earlier detachables. I think the quality control on these rivaled the cranks H.D put out.

I have/had this movement on my t/p, I also have the George Anderson kit to move the tp back which makes the movement worst. Jc, it's the front of the bracket and the docking hardware that has a loose fit. I replaced the rubber and it fits better but not great, I will be buying new solid mounts (thx u for posting the site).

Thanks Screamin for suggesting to try the backrest - good idea. Bike/KTP/mount are all brand new (dealer installed prior to delivery) - 32 miles on it. Plastic liners are fitted to the front forks (good contact with front bushings, no visible play), but the play is easily seen on the rear attachment points.

I'd take it back and tell them to get it right.  And no, they don't "all do that".

I suspect it's an adjustment of the actual docking hardware itself, where it's bolted to the bike.  In a case like this, 1/16" difference (which translates to 1/32" either direction) can make a big difference. :2vrolijk_21:
