Powdercoating engine guards
« on: April 07, 2011, 11:17:21 AM »

If I powdercoated my engine guards black on my O/B SERG, would it look funny if I left the fairing support bar chrome? Just looking for opinions....

I think your bike looks awesome like the way it is.  I would say that this is one of the only bikes HD made that I wouldn't modify (except for pipes and tuning).

If you want to add black parts on your bike you should go all the way!!! (forks, engine, pipes, etc.) but it would cost too much money.

You were looking for opinions, you got mine now!!!

Note:  Don't forget that once you go black, you never go back!!! LOL!

Hey thanks for your opinion. I agree that the bike looks good the way it is and I certainly dont plan on doing anymore blacking out, its just that I dont like the looks of the engine guards and think it would look better black- would add a bit of contrast in this area. Id prefer the Lindby bars, but they are $350 plus Id have to get their soft lowers and maybe their hwy pegs, if the HD mounts are too small. It would be a lot cheaper blacking out the stock guards and getting the HD black billet mounts and blk pegs, so i can continue to use my soft lowers, plus then I could sell my chrome HD mounts and pegs to recoup some $$( my Ironside pegs are worth a few bucks). Speaking of Lindby bars their 2008 and older bars are on sale for only $200, in case anyone is looking.

Powdercoating engine guards

....Im just trying to decide about the fairing support bar, because if I do want that done in black, Id have to do it now, as the bike is in the shop with the fairing off. If I decided just to do the engine guards only, I could wait and get it done later, as I can easily remove/replace them later on myself without removing the fairing.

I have powder coated front and back guards on my silver CVO RG, and the support brackets in my oppinion are are not that noticeable again just my oppinion! Of coarse if your that much of a perfectionist CHROME OR BLACK brackets would finish that area   "DH"

Actually, sorry- I had a look at my bike today in the shop, and I was mistaken- I thought the engine guards on the side bolted on to the chrome bar that runs horizontally, which the fairing supports bolt to- the horizontal bar is what I was talking about, but now I see that the whole engine guard is one piece- like a big sideways "C" shape.

So, I'd have to get the entire piece powdercoated, and I assume I'd have to take the fairing off to remove the entire engine guard. I'll probably worry about it later- I'm scared enough how much  the labor is gonna cost me at the moment- he's doing the PYO Monkey Bars and Ricor Intiminators now.

I feel your pain when it comes to the cost of making it yours, weather it's the cost of all parts you want or the cost of labor to have the parts installed that you don't feel confandent installing yourself. I try to have those parts installed as budjet allows. My 2003 RG got finished just in time to enjoy it for one riding season, I powder coated just about the entire bike, Ported and Polished 95 inch motor and Andrews 37G's with Fueling Plate & Pump, then I traded it for the 09 CVO RG Back to the drawing board!!! Fortunately this bike is all chromed so I will not be powder coat crazy just the engine and saddlebag guards and passenger back rest and luggage rack. Heads and Cam Chest will be done after the Extended Warranty has expired this bike is a Keeper! You might look into grabbing some parts off Ebay and then have them powder coated put them in the closet and have then installed as your budget allows It will at least help save on the cost of purchasing new parts!    Good luck with your Mods It's your bike only your eyes can be the real Judged

Thanks guys. Funny, I see on the HD website they sell gloss black engine guards for a batwing model for $200, but why nothing for the RG?

Are they trying to say the RG is the red headed step son of the HD family???

No, on the engine guards it says "except 1998-2009 FLTR". I believe it's a different engine guard for the Road Glides.

Sorry, for some reason I thought we were talking about a 2011.  Brain fade is getting worse as the years go by.

If you want to see what it'd look like black, just wrap electrical tape around them.  Its temporary.
