Probably used elsewhere also.  But it's handlebars that are apart right now.

I don't have a tool that works with whatever kind of connector this is.  Tried a paper clip in the holes adjacent to the pins.  Didn't work.  Tried making the paper clip diameter smaller.  Still no go.  Tried combination of the pin holes and what may be releases on the sides.  Still no go.  Or at least no go with the amount of force I was willing to put on the terminals trying to pull them out.

Someone who has been there before with this series of connector; what do you need to disassemble them and how is it done?

Just got a PM putting a name to it.  Connector is from Molex.  From there I'll try to track down a release and extraction tool.

Ok, just received via email this pic of one of the connectors with the locking plate removed to better see the locking mechanism.  Message said "use something small and pointed like a sewing needle."

If I'd ever sewn I might have thought of that....

Certainly looks like it'll work though.  Will advise later with confirmation or lack therof.

Don,  Found this page in the electrical manual.  not sure if it will help.

Thanks Dave.  Docs always help.  My electrical manuals aren't new enough to cover this so knew I'd have nothing here to illustrate.  Lack of knowledge did give us an excuse to take a break tonight though.  So it all worked out.

FYI, anyone searching for an extraction tool that accidentally types in "moles extraction tool" rather than "molex extraction tool" will get something not at all appropriate to your need.

It looks like that, at least in the short term, a sewing needle will work.  Will find out for sure later.  The illustration with the lock plate out of the way helps.  For anyone wanting a tool to cover both the male and female sides of these connectors I just found this:

http://www.xoxide.com/molexremover.html

It's cheap too.  Saw some from the OE for $60-$90.  Hell, that's as much as an air filter ??? !

This little tool is the male and female side all in one.  And it's longer than a sewing needle so will hopefully be easier to manipulate.  It is cheap enough to throw in the drawer of the tool box to have ready for a "next time."

Now just have find a sewing needle....

For the tool I use one I got from snap-on. Don't have the number handy but will get it when i'm at the shop next. To release the pins I use a pair of needle nose pliers to lift the lock plate up. You do not want to pull the lockplate out completely as they are a bitch to get back in.

Thanks Jim.  Not sure I would have removed the lock plate if things came apart as expected. But not sure I wouldn't have either if even just to look at it once first hand.  Good to know that's not a good idea.

I used the tip cleaners we use to clean an oxy-acetylene torch tips.

That's something else we could have done.  Gas torch was just across the shop....

Seeing the pic that was emailed with the lock plate removed was a benificial illustration.  Knowing what the locks look like and how they work was a large help.  With that and Jim's advice of what not to take apart Travis and I might be good to go.

Twolane. I just went through that process last week. What a pain in the azz. I used a paper clip and a small set of needle nose pliers. If I were to do it again I would remove and reinstall the bars myself, but have a good bike mechanic / shop take care of the rest. Best of luck. kb

If you buy a pack of sewing needles you can sew the buttons back on your shirts when they fall off and darn your socks too, kinda of a multi purpose tool.   :coolblue:

I don't have the snap on tool Jim talked about but he is right as always about not pulling the lock out, just put needle nose in the 2 holes and gently pulled out.

The locks on the pins are quite contary.  I could get several in a row with a paper clip and then come to a stop.  Found a glasses screwdriver set and kept grounding down til it worked for several and then went back to the paper clip method.

You sure get to the point of butt connectors but didn't resort to that.     :cherry:
