Good morning, Riders.

Really need all your help on this one. Recently purchased a '06 FHLTCUSE, 103 cu inch - stock.

Was out for my 1st ride on it this weekend and for the first 100 miles everything was terrific.
However, on Sunday a trouble showed itself 3 times - once very close to life threatening.

I'm sitting at a uncontrolled T intersection and am going to make a left turn. There are cars approaching the intersection but I have lots of time and decide to make the turn. I turn the throttle and there is NO response from the rear wheel. I "crank" the throttle harder and this time the bike starts to 'idle' out into the intersection. Pull in the clutch rear the engine and the RPM's are there. Again, leave the clutch out and throttle and still no response from the rear wheel. By this time I'm looking at being T-Boned by a front grille. Thankfully the cage driver visually understood there was a problem and slowed down to a crawl. A couple more twists on the throttle, rev's were fine and then again release the clutch and this time the bike moves as it should.

Two other times it happened; once again turning left at a similar intersection and again turning right at a 4 way. Both times I almost lose control of the bike as the foot comes off the ground as the throttle is being turned.
 
I REALLY need some help on this one. I can't imagine the results in heavier, faster traffic.

ALL you help, suggestions and recommendations would be appreciated.

With a problem like this, I wouldn't mess around with it. Check your throttle cable. Then take it to your local dealer.

If your twisting the throttle on an 06 and not getting any response...it has to be your throttle cable.

First check your throttle cable adjuster just below your throttle. Make sure the jam nut is not loose and that the cable has not separated from the elbow. 

Next take the air cleaner cover off and check the cable is attached at the throttle body correctly.  Check the throttle cable guide.  My guess is your guide is loose and when you twist the throttle it is allowing the cable to move creating slop.  That means instead of you throttle pulling on the throttle barrel it is just taking up the slop created by the loose guide.
Should be fairly obvious once you get the air cleaner cover off, just trace the cables from the throttle barrel up...the first thing is the cable guide.  The cable guide plate is attached with just one screw to the throttle body.  Both the the throttle and idle cable go through the plate.  The plate needs to be solid.

I am working off memory of how my 2000 Roadking was attached so hopefully your 2006 is the same and this helps you out.

I couldn't understand the description with any certainty.  Nail it down.

Was it:

A) Twist the throttle and engine did not rev

or

B) Engine rev'd normally but bike would not pull itself


If (A) and recommendations so far notwithstanding it's hard to believe it's a throttle cable since the problem came and went.  A cable is generally either broken or not or out of adjustment or not.  One time I worked on a bike whose butterfly in the intake could spin on the throttle shaft.  It moved as you'd expect it sometimes.  Other times it didn't.  So it was an intermittent no rev problem.

If (B) consider clutch engagement/disengagement and transmission issues.  You might have had it between gears (false neutral).  That's surprisingly easy to do.

I wasn't sure by the description either, but like Twolane said if the rpm's follow the throttle movement, than it is a clutch issue and disregard all that I said.

I have experienced a similar problem.

Considering that you are a fellow Canadian, no doubt the bike has been in storage for quite a while such as mine.

Most likely you are dealing with a broken throttle cable.

I always wash my bike prior to storing for the winter and now after polishing the bike I always give the throttle a couple of twists to ensure it has good movement.

I was told if a bike is washed and put away in storage without twisting the throttle a few times over the following week, it can begin to stick and if left for an extended period of time, the next time you go to use it may snap the cable.

It happened to me twice over the years prior to me receiving the good advise I now follow religiously.

If the cable was broken I don't see how it would recover.

To try and explain my cable thoughts.  

The throttle cable is a cable surrounded by a housing.  One end of the housing goes in the adjuster up by the throttle.  The bare cable then continues thru to the grip where it is connected.

The other end of the cable housing is butted up against a throttle cable guide, at the throttle body where the bare cable continues and is attached to the throttle barrel on the throttle body.

The points at where the throttle cable housing butts up to must be solid.  If they where compromised they may bend, slip, wiggle.  

To try and explain using the bike cable picture.  The housing is out and if you squeeze the brake you get nothing.  The cable is not broken but because the housing has nothing to butt up against pulling the brake just moves the whole housing and cable. 
He did say it only happened when he turned...with the bars straight the cable housing may rest in the correct place and work normal, but when he turns the bars the cable housing "pops out" for lack of a better word.

Had this happen on an old dirt bike.

Only have to check two places to know for sure.

After all this, I am guessing when we get the rest of the story, it was probably B) the throttle worked fine but the clutch engagement shot ie.

twist throttle get rpms but no go=clutch engagement problem.

Just noticed also that the problem was cited by another one post wonder.  Too often guys shotgun their problems on multiple sites to see what responses are offered then never do anything ever again.  Their ought to be a six beer toll to post issues if you've got less than 100 posts.

I agree with Don.......but it seems like alot of trouble just to get answer to a simple problem. Simple if the question wasn't so vague. Might be trying to use me.....but I'm used to it.........women use me all the time just to get SEX. I have learned to live with it
