Who makes the best inflation/plugging kit ?
« on: April 30, 2006, 02:36:16 PM »

Just wondering if anyone has used one of the kits available to plug a tire on the road? Some have co2 and some have compressors. And has anybody used that Slime stuff on the Road? I usually carry the Stop and Go plug kit with a couple of cans fix-a-flat. I have plugged flat tires with this  stuff and it works . Just takes up too much space. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Jerry,

I haven't had the need to fix a flat in about 15 years, so I can't speak from real experience on the plug kits.  Just from a space consideration, I'm planning on buying one of the CO2 cartridge types rather than the compressor.

As for the various products meant to seal the tire from the inside, like Slime or some of the aerosol products, I would not recommend them for anything other than emergency repairs.  Many of these materials will severely corrode aluminum rims, and also tend to have negative effects on tire balance.  In fact, the Slime website, while trying to downplay these issues, eventually admits to both of them.

And the other thing about the Slime product or any other goopy fix-a-flat stuff is that it pisses off the schmuck that pops the bead to repair the tire. That chit goes everywhere and is awful messy when released out of the tire.

Thanks for the input. I like the looks of the kit. I have not had a flat since 86 I had an fxwg with tubed tires. I was carrying tire irons etc so I was able to fix on the road. Used a log or something as a jack. I switched to touring bikes in 91 have not had a flat since but now that I think of it I don't know how I would lift the wheel. Somone needs to invent a small lifting tool that would let the tire be off the ground. The device should be electric push button type of thing. :)

Just saw this thread Jerry.  I've got one of the CO2 cartridge kits and have carried some version of it for a long time.  Used it twice.  You feel like the fancy or important part are the cartridges.  But that's just the "air."  Both times I've bought new kits to start over with the cartridge gun may have been quite fancy or rugged but the plugs and plug tool that came with them were pretty crappy.  So don't hesitate to make a trip to the auto parts store and get some honest to god good plugs and an insertion tool to go with them.  Couple that with the inflation cartridges and gun and then you're good to go.

I just bought a top of the line plug kit from a BMW shop and was told it would take more than one or two Co2 cartridges to fill a tire.  They suggested a cigarette lighter powered portable air compressor.  What experience has anyone had filling a tire with Co2?  Since I'm now prepared, I'm pretty sure I'll never have a flat.  I'm banking on that!

I've filled them with 2 (at least I think I have, it's been awhile).  One thing to remember, however, is that "full" from the cartridge won't "feel" as full as it will from your air hose.  CO2 expands a lot more as it gets hot.  So you've got to start with the tire a little softer.

Remember, the plug kit is only a temporary repair to get you back to civilization.  Kind of like a temporary spare on a car, maintain low speeds and get a real repair ASAP.

Really Basic: I always carry 3 or 4 different sizes of panhead sheet-metal screws. What?? That's right. Laugh if you must, but I've pulled nails out of 3 different tires in four years, run a screw in, aired up at a gas station or at home if that's where I saw the flat, and driven back to a shop for a tire change. Once ran down the hiway at 70 with wife's old Dyna, with a screw in the front tire. (ballz? no, stupid.) Use a screw bigger than the nail or whatever you pulled out.
Basic - 1: Same screws, plus some super-glue on the threads first. Don't know if it even makes a difference.
Basic - 2: Auto store reamer/plugger and cartridge filler. Have never used it; ass-ume it will work when needed.
And... this is with tubeless tires...all I run.

Has anybody ever used an airhose plugged into the sparkplug hole and cranked the engine over to inflate a flat tire? If so how did it work.

Take Care,

Grover

I carried one of those for years, but luckily never had to use it.  Talked to a few people with mixed reactions about this type of inflator so after seeing an ad in a cycle mag for a ( cycle pump ), I ordered one. They are just a little larger than a pack of smokes and are supposedly used by around the world type enthusiasts. The thing I like about it is it fits in the lowers compartment with a little room left over and weighs in at less than two pounds. Actually hope I never have to use it though.  Never liked the idea of the co2 bottles as if you use them to help out someone, then you're without until they're replaced.
