SME advise wanted on Woods 555 cam
« on: April 14, 2011, 04:09:31 PM »

I looking at having the following parts installed on my 2011SESG while its sitting at the dealership and I'm stuck in Afghanistan.

V&H Power Duals
V&H HO Mufflers
RevPer EMS
555 Woods Cam
Cometic .30 Gasket

However, when the dealership spoke with Woods Performance they recommend the following parts...
Advise needed!!! I'm not trying to be cheap but are the following parts needed or just recommended?
I have read a lot of threads on this forum and usually don't see these parts on the list.

SE Adjustable Pushrods
SE Cam Bearing Kit
Woods Lifters

Thanks,
Duff

You're changing cams so you have access to the cam bearings.  The bearing change is an improvement and it's cheap.  Changing them anyway so no reason not to use the better bearings.

Changing the lifters isn't an absolute requirement.  They are roller lifters so they don't care what camshaft they are rolling on.  If you decide to change lifters there are much less expensive options than the Woods lifters though.  Check out the Feuling HP+ lifter or the HD "B" lifter.  Should be able to get a set of either for somewhere around $125.

Adjustable pushrods are part of a cam change when going to aftermarket cams.

Twolanerider,

Thank you for your advise. I've been reading almost thread on this site for the last month and trying to soak it all in. Maybe someday all that reading will lead to knowledge.
thanks again,

Looks like you've got a good program ahead of you.  Hope you enjoy both the process and the result.  One of the tuners on the site has reported his inability to get that cam dialed in.  Everyone else seems to enjoy the results with it though so the isolated reference seems no reason to worry.  A NorCal member wrote just a few days ago of a great running bike with that cam and the EMS system for engine management and tuning.  So have fun and enjoy the ride :2vrolijk_21: .

I hope my runs as great as the NorCal members bike. I'll post results as soon as I pick up the bike in Mid May.

I JUST GOT MY 555's AND PUT THEM IN WITH OUT CHANGING LIFTERS OR BEARINGS AND SAW NO REASON TO ANYWAY.  THE PUSHRODS ARE ONLY NECCESSARY IF YOU ARE NOT PULLING THE HEADS.  YOU CAN CUT THE ORIGINALS WITH A BOLT CUTTER AND INSTALL ADJUSTABLES WITH THE CAM WITH OUT TOUCHING THE TOP END BUT SINCE YOU ARE REPLACING THE HEAD GASKETS IT IS NOT IMPERATIVE THAT YOU DO.  I WILL SAY THE PUSHRODS ARE CONSIDERABLY STRONGER THAN THE OE RODS.  I AM GOING TO TUNE IT ON THE DYNO EARLY NEXT WEEK SO I WILL DROP AND LINE AS TO HOW IT RUNS. HOPE YOU ENJOY THE RIDE WHEN YOU GET HOME............I DOUBT YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED.

Wrong again twolaner.....the tuner expressed is disapointment with the 555 as a drop in cam. If you knew how to read a dyno graph you could CLEARLY see that the torque is not what was advertisied in the lower rpm's but then again your inability to correctly read a graph will excuse your ignorance to this cam even though you have a VAST amount of knowledge in the tuning and building world.  The 555 comes alive at 3000rpm and pulls hard at that point however the tq between 1500 and 3000 rpm leaves a lot to be desired and this is where people ride all day long.

Doc

I was wishing this guy good luck with his choices and commenting that others had had positive experience in combination with the EMS package this gentleman had selected.  Didn't name any other names Doc.  Willie S (as opposed to Willie G) said something once like methinks thou dost protest too much.

For some reason you seem to have a soft spot for me.  I appreciate the attention.  But your flattery isn't necessary.

For whatever reason you seem to enjoy biting back when I'm involved.  I hope you enjoy the effort.  It would seem, however, that since you're now admitting you were the tuner you'd have better things to do.  It has nothing to do with my (never claimed) professional tuning skills nor the sycophantic audience you ascribe to me and seem to worry so much over.  But when you spend 4+ hours tuning a member's bike, take his money then tell him you're not done yet but that you'll finish it online and over the phone after he's home there is some work to be done somewhere.  And it's not with me.

That being so.  For some reason Doc enjoys me.  He doesn't make a lot of sense when he does.  And while I enjoy flattery and attention as much as the next guy I'm bored to tears and generally annoyed by irrationality.  So Doc can vent and fume and rant and rave as I'm sure he will (or not if he really cares about his perception; but that's not likely).  But I'll be off in the occasional thread that is actually enjoyable.

And, just for the record, ninety bucks is still too much for an air filter; whether you're shilling the product or not :drink: .

Doc, I don't understand the attack on Twolaner. Clearly this goes back to something between you two, but given Twolaner's countless hours of service and advice helping so many people on this forum, I don't understand the apparent unprovoked attack. I've met many people from this site that I've done business with, including you, that have provided products and services to me, and I have benefited greatly. I've also benefited from your posts, but not this one. I found Twolaner's post worthwhile and it gives me something to think about and investigate further if I were to consider a Woods 555 cam.

I suspect this is the issue.  Doc makes a living as a tuner...  Twolane speaks highly of the Revolution Performance EMS tuning device, which negates the need for a tuner such as Doc.  So unfortunately, Doc has chosen to attack Twolane on a number for fronts in an apparent thinly veiled effort to minimize Twolane's impact as an advocate of products, such as the EMS.
