Break-in and changing oil
« on: April 15, 2011, 03:33:20 PM »

Well, I have around 300mi on the clock, CVO Ultra.  I want to change the engine oil before the tune.

Should I use Screamin' Eagle Syn3, Syn3,  put in regular Dino oil or put in the Amsoil I ran on my other bikes? After the first 300, I'll change it again at around 1000.... then be on the regular 5k cycle.

Ideas and opinions appreciated!

TIA

I'd like to suggest that the moderator's restrict any more threads concerning oil.  All these threads are clogging up the ether and probably damaging the ozone layer.  ;)

To answer your question, it really doesn't matter.  If it makes you happy to change the oil at 300 miles, even though it shouldn't be necessary, go for it.  Don't forget the important part, the filter.  As to what brand or type of oil, there are probably a hundred existing threads on the subject by now, with no scientifically proved 100% correct answer.  IMHO, I'd just go with what you've been using in the past (Amsoil).  Putting dyno oil in it now, after running SYN3 for the first 300 miles, isn't going to do anything positive, and it isn't as tolerant of high temps as the synthetics.

Have fun with your new ride.

Its not you, we have all just gotten tired of the same old oil talk.
grc is correct, pick one and go with it.
If you type oil in the search box you will get more then you could ever want in opinions and answers.
Hope this helps you, and enjoy the ride. ;D

If we ever get the oil thing solved, we can move on to which spark plugs to use.

I don't use sparkplugs anymore.  I've moved up to ionizing plasma igniter's, and now get 100 mpg with 20 more horsepower.

Motor break-in is important. A lot of people blame the motor or the build itself for short life motors. People get pissed at JIMS, but it's probably cuz they didnt break it in properly and the motor crapped out cuz of it.

Run dino for the first 1500 miles so that the parts mate. First 50-100 miles give it your first oil change. Then change it about ever 500 miles until you reach 1500 miles. Then switch to synthetic. People will vary in opinion, but this works well.

Take if from me. I have a 131 and it's fun!

Have you had the bike on a dyno with the 131?

If you have an untouched Jim's 131, your fun will end around 2,000 miles. Start saving up now, cause you'll be shelling out the $$ to fix their JUNK   :P

WHAT'S THE BEST OIL, SPARK PLUGS, WAX, FUEL, WINDSHEILDS, PIPES, MUFFLERS AND VIRTUALLY ANYTHING ELSE YOU CAN THINK OF WILL NEVER BE RESOLVED FOE AS LONG AS WE ALL MAY LIVE. JUST FIND SOMETHING THAT WORKS FOR YOU AND USE IT UNTIL SOMEBODY COMES TO YOU AND PROVES THEY HAVE BUILT A BETER MOUSE TRAP.  TIL THEN GO WITH YOUR EXPERIENCES.

No need to apologize.  But it is what you asked.

The question can always be asked.  This particular question, however, has been asked over and over (and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over) again.  Aside from the more obvious and general answer of "use something good" there will never be a more specific resolution.

SORRY I SAW YOUR THREAD BEING HIJACKED AND JUMPED ON THE BAND WAGON. WITH IC ENGINES TODAY BREAK IN IS NOT AS CRITICAL AS IT USED TO BE.  RIDE IT NORMALLY AND ADD POWER AND REVS AS YOU ACCUMULATE MORE MILES, THEN CHANGE THE OIL AT HARLEYS SPECIFIED MILEAGE AND YOU'RE GOOD TO GO.  I DONT BELEIVE IN CHANGING OIL AFTER 50-100-250-500.  HARLEY DOES AN AWFULW LOT OF TESTING ON THEIR MACHINES AND AS THE MANUFACTURER THEY HAVE MORE DATA THAN ANY OF USE WILL EVER GATHER IN OUR LIFE TIMES. FOLLOW THE MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE AND YOU WILL NOT BE LEAD ADSTRAY.

I seriously would not be concerned 'what oil to use' in your Jim's 131, because the best oil in the world is not going to do you any good until you rebuild the crank, replace main bearing with Timken, and replace/change lifters.. Not being an ass,, just giving good advice, pointing out proven/known facts with Jims motors.  Now if you have a Jim's motor with all this addressed, then i retract all said and will suggest Ams Oil    :2vrolijk_21:
