FXR Maintenance
« on: April 15, 2011, 07:25:40 PM »

So I purchased a 99 FXR2 last year and it is the best bike Ive ever owned.  I went to the local Harley dealer and the mechanic I talked to asked me what kind of bike I had and I told him an FXR2 and he said "Oh you have a Dyna".  After a short debate I walked out shaking my head and decided to seek help here instead.  My question to all is what annual maintenance do I need to do on my bike.  I get the normal stuff like the air cleaner, oil change, tires, brake check and plugs, but anything else I don't know about?  Also, what is the best way to change the oil without having it end up all over the bike?  The bike is stock and has 50,000 miles on it.

You've covered most of what you need to do...  12 years old and 50,000 miles would suggest flushing and replacing the brake fluid.  Lubricating the cables... Change oil in all three holes...motor, primary and transmission...   :2vrolijk_21:

Isn't this Sh!t funny! I went to the dealer to get some parts and told him I had a 99 FXR3 with an EVO, and he said EVO? I said yeah, it's an EVO. That was my first red flag, then I was very apprehensive about talking parts. But, luckily I have a parts manual to get the correct numbers from. If I were you, I would just change the fluids, flush the brakes, tighten the nuts and bolts and ride. These things are fairly bullet-proof. I treat my twinkie no different, and it's been as reliable as one could ask for.

Show us some pics, when you get a chance! Welcome

While I was at the dealer, I did talk to another mechanic that suggested I change the lifters at 50k.  Any sound reasoning to this?  I know my old Dyna needed it, but that was a different motor so I'm not sure and the Dyna needed it anyway cause the cam was worn so I just rebuilt it anyway...

I always made a cardboard chute and stuffed some rags behind it. There is also an aftermarket and I thought a later Harley oil tank that had a drain hose on the other lower rear and a hose plug dealy bob that attaches to the frame with a hose clamp. Then you just pull the hose off the plug device and letter drain. Good luck! Face
