Upgrading 110 CVO crank to 23893-10
« on: April 20, 2011, 02:32:20 AM »

My 2008 FLHTCUSE 3 has a bad crankshaft and i wonder if it's a good idea to upgrade to have some good come out of this repair .

Crank has bad runout at 7000 miles after a dyno run , never will know if the run wrecked it or just made it worse .

Thinking about putting in flywheel 23893-10 , need compensator 40274-08 and pistons i'm not sure thinking 22574-10 ( ask my dealer today ) .

Need to change cam plate but would keep that one 25355-06A and oil pump 26037-06 .

Love to hear some experts talking about this one , good or bad , bearings and good ideas .

If it was mine I would forget the HD part numbers and go to the aftermarket. If it has to come apart you might as well 'upgrade' it with components that will last. You don't want to do this again...

Dito that, My understanding is that in the USA at least, these guys are hard to beat, Dark Horse Crankworks. You will have a bit of shipping involved, but the job will be done right :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for the reply's , the engine is at the dealer to check al tolerances now . Crank , cams , camplate , etc... to see if he can find what got the problems started .

He advices to keep it stock and repair using OEM parts but not change to the special parts .

He did rebuilt some CVO engines before so do trust his advice , dealer says it's a great engine when build right .

Dealer never had problems after their repairs , dealer is OIT in the Netherlands . Great team of mechanics .

Wanted to upgrade because the money must be spent anyway but good engine builders are rare and sending it back to US is a great risk .

Got a Panhead engine shipped to me using FedEx some time ago and it arrived damaged .

What started the problem was the crank scissored which is very common with the 4 3/8" stroke cranks in the 96" and up engines.

Once that happens, it usually takes out the oil pump and cam plate as well.

Another problem starting to show up is the big end of the rod is ovaling at the crank is you are one to beat on your bike a lot.

I recommend Dark Horse as well and definitely go with aftermarket if possible. DO NOT let the dealer stick a HD crank in the bike without at least having the new crank trued, welded and balanced before it's installed. This will extend service life greatly.

Best to FIX yours (qualified rebuilder disassembles, new OS pin, true , new bearings, balance, plug / weld) the part you replace yours with is not an upgrade, sorry to say.

Why put in the same parts that got you and who knows how many others?  There are very few people who would not do a rebuild the right way with the right parts as mentioned by using Darkhorse and aftermarket products.  Warranty to me on my 08 has been practically worthless as they kept fixing defective issues with the same parts.  Shame on me for being so tolerant (thickheaded)  not to knock your mechanic but I thought my SM & mechanics were the best guys going until metal started coming out of places they shouldn't have and refused to do the work telling me they all do that.  I went through the complete primary and fixed it myself last winter.  Flywheel and top end next winter.

Good Luck

With those pistons, a case bore and the HD 4.060 barrels. Lot's of $$ compared to fixing the 110 crank

Darkhorse usually replaces the taper-top rods with wrist pins fully supported, with an H-Beam rod.
Those are fully machined, magnafluxed, shot-piened.
Ran the same brand in our AHDRA racer.

I'd  go aftermarket. I also hear Dark Horse does great work. Why not buy a 120R kit and have your mechanic install it? Cost more but more performance Depends on the final cost. sorry to hear of your problems. Rick

I would defiantly go with dark Horse with out a doubt.  I have there crank Pro pins SE rods and timken roller conversion.  107" motor big valve heads Procharger with 15psi boost 20,000 miles  love it.  If you have them do the work they offer a 12 month bottom end warranty   I sent short block to them after I snapped my stock crank in half
