Good Seats Gone Bad?
« on: April 21, 2011, 01:42:26 PM »

I was reading the other thread about the best seat and would like to ask in this one, do good seats go bad? My Sundowner on the Road King does not seen as soft as it used to be. What is the foam life on seats? Bed mattresses do not last forever so would we expect foam seats to fail over time?

We know a company in Vonore TN that has reworked two seats for the wife's bikes changing shape and loft.  I may have this done to my seat which is two years old with 35'000 miles of butt time.

The stock seats on my 04 & 05 lost all support over time.  Replaced them with Drag Specialties seats...

I believe the type of foam used in the seat would play a big part in the deteroration.  Open celled foam would naturally deteriorate faster than closed cell foam.

The soft, cushiony foam is generally open celled while the firmer (and more comfortable on long hauls) foam is usually closed cell foam.

Just cause you know I'm a hillbilly you want to see me ride on the metal side right? I might have failed rocket science class I  spect it'd be worse-er. :P

When I go ask about a rebuild I will question about the foam used, open or closed. I like the look of the seat with the matching basket weave and HD logos.

There is also the option of sending your seat to Alligator Bob or Pro Pad and have the gel insert installed

http://www.alligatorbob.com/propad.htm

http://www.thepropad.com/Seat-Pads-Inserts-Prodlist.html

Mattm did this to his '05 SEEG stock seat, and he is pleased with the results.

Hate to state what's probably obvious but I'm thinking it's less about chronological age and more dependant upon mileage/seat time.
Afterall, I would expect a lightly used original on an '05 to have a lot more life left in it than something that JCZ put on his ride, say last week  ;D
Sorry JC but you have to admit you put a LOT of miles on (that's envy you hear by the way).
He and the other high mileage riders are the ones I think would have the most experience with seat longevity

I believe it is because they are getting older, ass getting bonier, so they blame it on a worn out seat :huepfenlol2:

Are you, sir, implying that I ride to much? :-\          :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Actually, I think you've made a valid point in the life expectancy of a seat.  Not that Harley's ever made a great seat, but Ernie's wore two of em out but he also racks the miles up, so that may lend to your thoughts above.  On the other hand.....while I'm sure he's wore a seat out, I'm not convinced it was a motorcycle seat that he wore out.  Have you ever walked behind him. :nervous:

My stock seats were good for about 4 years or so.
I was down in San diego 2 weeks ago to visit my daughter. I was telling Her that my butt starting to hurt after long hours of riding and She say,s to me Daddy you should get some Booty Pop,s . I asked Her what that was and she said just wait i,ll get u some. Well Kerry and Brandon and the dogs came up and are hanging with us in santa cruz and she gives me these. I told her I can,t wear these and she says why not. I told her they are lady,s pants and she says no one would know .i said but what happens if i get in an accident and taken to hospital and i,m wearing booty pops.   Not saying if i tried them on but they would need an opening in front and have to be a size bigger
