earpiece for Garmin Roadtech 660
« on: April 25, 2011, 08:26:43 AM »

Does anyone know of a bluetooth ear piece that I can use with a Garmin Roadtech 660?  All I want to do is hear the spoken instructions from the unit.  I do not want to listen to radio or mp3 files.

Since over 50 people read this without response I thought I would report the information that I found.  I am NOT a gadget wizard which is why I originally posted this question.  But I did learn some things by calling around.  First the earpiece MUST be A2DP compliant, this is the technology that Garmin uses on the Roadtech (and other) units, A2DP is a Bluetooth format.  I then did a few Google searches and found some earpieces, but I found even more on the Best Buy website.  Prices vary a lot, but I wanted a piece with good sound, an earloop to hold it on in the wind, and a reasonable price.  Out in the world there are NO demo units (for sanitary reasons) so you have to pick one by looking at it. I chose the Jabra Extreme p/n UJ25-0028 $99.00 (www.jabra.com/EXTREME).  Setup was easy and fast and it paired as an audio device on the Roadtech and paired with my Verizon phone.  Therefore, while riding, I can hear instructions from the earpiece as well as accept phone calls.  I wasn't real happy about the price but most of these A2DP ear pieces are more expensive than ones without this technology.  Some are more expensive, and some have double ear buds (which are not legal here) and some are cheaper, moreover, if you want to shop around on the net, the prices vary widely.  Hope this helps someone.

OWL893, just a couple of questions. 1st, do you wear a helmet? 2nd does, the earpiece stay in place? 3rd, how long is the battery life? I like to take rides of 6hrs or more. I'm thinking of getting the Stone or Stone2.
Thanks in advance

DD,
I wear a half helmet, but if you are asking if this would stay in place without a helmet, I believe that would depend on other conditions including: speed, windshield (or none), weather conditions, etc.  I suppose under extreme conditions any earpiece could fly off, but this stays on (so far) with sun glasses at highway speeds.  The straps on the half helmet kinda lock it in, but a guy could rig up a little tether using one of those (Tom Cruise) eyeglass suspenders.  Put one side on the earpiece and the other on a vest button or something (just a thought).  The battery life on this (Jabra) claims 5.5 talk and 10 days standby.  I have not tested either threshold as yet, however, the kit comes with a house charger, a lighter charger and a USB charger, it literally plugs in almost anywhere.  Hope this helps.

Does it also get the mp3 music from teh 660?  That is why most were not responding, in my opinion, since we use the wired hook-up allowing CB, radion, GPS, and passenger comms to work.  The bluetooth is a single function.....GPS directions with phone (both from 660)

Iceman,

Just turned them on for you.  Although I do not have any tunes loaded on my 660 (Ipod on board as well as AM,FM,CD) the 660 has some exerpts from audio books loaded as samples.  They played just fine, so I think you can count on the ear bud to play music, audio books, etc.  These bluetooth devices (A2DP) are called "stereo headsets" and pair as an audio device, so if you want tunes in one ear, these will do it.  I prefer my tunes through the speakers, or once in while if I am riding back in a pack and everybody is cranking their stereo, I will put on a set of buds from my Nano, not supposed to do this, but it isolates my sound.

Owl,

I ended up buying the same earpiece as you, the extreme. I can pair it with my phone and it works great, but I cant pair it with my Garmin. Any things I should know or tricks?

Mornin' Lou.  Earpiece already paired to phone, good.  You have to pair the phone to the 660 as a "bluetooth" device and pair the earpiece as an "Audio" device.  Don't know which phone you have but it needs to be set to "discover" or "pair(ing)" mode.  On the 660 make sure it has Bluetooth "enabled" (tools>settings>bluetooth) select "enabled. Then initiate a search when your phone is discovered enter 1234 on the phone.  You can work this from the phone as well, see page 14 in the owner's manual.  THEN pair the earpiece as an AUDIO device (page 18) which is a similar procedure (tools>settings>bluetooth) under Audio touch ADD, touch OK, it will find the headset touch OK. One unrelated thing for you, I was unsure how wind resistant the earloop was since it snaps on, so I took a small piece of wire (like telephone wire) and wrapped it over the earpiece stem and around the ear stem the brought the ends together and with needle nose made a tight, small twist, then clipped the ends. Earpiece will not come off the ear loop, just a suggestion.
