oil temp
« on: April 30, 2011, 04:48:37 PM »

I was on a ride today, about 55 degrees here in MI., and I saw the temperature on the fairing oil temp gauge was headed to the 350 degree mark, but the engine didn't seem that hot while riding or stopped.  I installed the unit a couple of years ago and it seemed to work fine.  The sending unit is in the oil pan, could it be going bad or is there something else going on? Has anyone else had this issue?  I just had the dealer do a 20k using amsoil, as always.

Yup.  That's why I never changed my dumb ass air temp gauge.  I don't want to see that.  So I just look straight ahead.  :P

I'm bringing it to the dealer, maybe they can figure it out.  Possibly a retune because when I pulled the plugs they looked too white in color (too lean of a mixture).

Can a bike go out of tune for one reason or another, after 20K?  I have a SERT with true duals and air filter.

Cvostu, I am with you on that. When I bike was just broken in and completely stock I made a trip thru Nevada and when I was passing thu Mesquite my air temp gauge was pegged at 120 degrees. I am glad I did not have an oil temp guage to look at. It pinged a lot, but the performance was good. Now I have Fulsac stage one kit and so far no pinging.( although I haven't been in quite that hot of weather since I installed it)CAHDBIKER

I have one instlled in my oil pan also, don't have any problems. I enjoy seeing my oil temperature. My body tells me the air temp and I don't need a gauge for that! Drove across the desert from Salt Lake City to Napa and it didn't malfunction. Sorry to here the people having issues! I guess it is like anything else, some have problems and some don't. I guess I am one of those fortunate one's!

First guess would be that either the dealer knocked the thing when changing the oil, or you have a bad sending unit...or one caused the other.  I seriously doubt your oil temp was actually 350 degrees, particularly when it was 55 degree ambient temperature.  Even if the oil cooler wasn't functioning properly, the oil wouldn't reach temps like that.

I suspect it's the sending unit too, so I called to get the price of a replacement,$48.00 :'(.  There mus be an oil temp sensor to replace it for a lot less, if anyone knows of one please let me know.  In the mean time I'm going to ride it and see if it climbs to that temp again, then I have the temperature gauge from my bar-b-q and I'll stick it where the sun don"t shine and take it's temp to see if it reads a different temperature.  I realize it's not scientific, but it may give me verification on a bad sensor.

Does that mean someone found a use for the air temp gauge?
