How simple is it to remove my PCIII?
« on: May 02, 2011, 09:40:26 AM »

I have a SEST and all of the stuff to tune my 03 FXSTDSE, I have a PC III on my bike now. It was put on at a local indy w/dyno and now it runs about the same except in a few areas where it might not be quite quick, but it does have alot better fuel economy.... I want to know what happens when I unplug it? I believe that it plugs into my test port, and then a power supply and a ground...  Thinking about pulling the plug and then riding?? Any help is appreciated THANKS!

The PCIII is an interface unit in between the stock ECM and the main wiring harness.

Find the ecm and you'll see the PC device. Just unplug the unit, take the rubber boot off the PC harness and reinstall it on the factory plug. Then plug the factory harness back into the ECM.

Be careful not to ride the bike too much before the SEST tune if you have a bunch of performance mods done after you place the bike back to stock. You do not want to lean out the engine.

Install the SEST and enjoy!

It was actually running richer before the tune/PCIII install. Milage was worse, and tuner said that he usually adds fuel, but in my case he was reducing it in alot if areas. It has a map that was installed by the dealer with the SEST last year and it actually ran really really strong. It had a PCIII on it that had died and that is where the SEST came from. I wanted it dyno tuned, and my choice of tuner does PC stuff only with his dyno. I really want to compare it with back to back rides so I can tell if what my gut is telling is true. Thanks!

Disconnect (remove) the PCIII and download a canned map from SE's newest CD (20111-11). I'm sure there is a base map that is close to your build.

You'll have to reinstall your O2 sensors to get the SEST working properly.

The 03 bike won't have sensors to reinstall.

2003 FXSTDSE doesn't have oxygen sensors.

Pete, it's pretty simple.  Remove the PCIII harness connectors, one at the ECM and one at the main bike wiring harness.  Take the original ECM connector from the main bike harness and connect it directly to the ECM.  You're done unless you want to actually remove the PCIII permanently.

Go to the PC website for the actual instructions for the 2001-2006 Softails for a detailed explanation of the install.  The file is too big for me to attach.

So it sounds like I CAN switch back to normal by unplugging and replugging to bypass  PCIII and then go back again to the PC by putting it back in the loop. Isn't there already a map in the ECM and the PC just piggybacks on it??

Yes.  The Power Commander adds instructions that causes alterations of timing and fuel from the base map.  The original base map in the ECM is not altered nor removed by using the Power Commander.  Removing the Power Commander just takes the bike to whatever map was in the ECM to begin with.

Update: I did as advised and it started and runs and when I blip the throttle I have a slight exhaust color and smell of richness/ gas odor in the garage. I will ride it later and confirm that it is back to "normal" but I'm guessing that u were right and it is back to the canned map Harley put on it when they SEST tuned it. I also think it will run better, but we will c what my seat tells me. Thanks for the help!

No "guessing" on that one.  If you removed the Power Commander the only map remaining is whatever was the last map loaded in the ECM.
