strapless towing
« on: May 03, 2011, 01:29:23 AM »

I have been looking at ways to trailering my bike without the tiedowns. I saw this one from Sonoma Custom Machine
they make trailers or the "the Clamp" by itself for $199.00
http://www.outlawmotorcycle.com/
Sorry I do not know how to make a hyper link.
My question is has anyone used this product? I did a search on wheel clamps and came up with nothing.

Havn't used this one, but have recently used one similar though without the clamp, worked a treat with tie downs for added security.

Looks like a good unit. ;)

I have a similar clamp on my shop lift at home. I add other means of support to the bike and it's not rolling down the highway. There's NO WAY I'd trust the clamp to hold the bike w/o tie down straps.

Wouldn't try trailering without straps.
Maybe with the frame clamp is good, but I would still add one on each side to take up the lateral loads.
The though of all the stress down low on turns would be too much for my comfort level.

Maybe the bike and clamp will hold - maybe the the through bolts or floor will not  :nixweiss:

I stand by my earlier statement. Granted I'm pulling an H&H trailer which are known for being heavy duty,, behind a 40 ft.Foretravel which rides very well. But i have put over 15K with the Harley's riding without straps and not so much as a wiggle.

But the reason everything comes in different colors is " To each his own".

From the strapless website.
EXCEPTION: Safety straps required if the cycle is located crossways on a trailer or motor home lift since this does put added stress on only one side of the clamps at a time.

So - go around turns long or fast enough and you put added stress on only one side of the clamps at a time..

I haven't trailered yet but seems like straps would be the cheapest insurance one could buy......

They manufacture their trailer with the "clamp" on the front with, if you look closely, rear tie-down points.  According to the quick release version, it states it eliminates the need for the "front" straps, nothing about all straps.
