I worked in Portugal a few years ago and saw hundreds of cork trees...and semi-loads of it going to the 'mills'. Supposivley there is a world -wide shortage of cork and even some of the high-end wine makers are using synthetic 'corks'.  Funny, though, I don't feel guilty for having cork floors behind the bar and in the billiards room.

Why does that video keep you from drinking wine?!  Are you opposed to shirtless men with axes preparing your drinks?   :drink:

Amazing the trees can recover from the harvest.

The things we suddenly find ourselves curious about.  Ok, just learned:

A cork oak tree usually is harvested the first time when it's about 25 years old.  It can then be re-harvested approximatley every 12 years and commonly supplies about 12 harvests in its lifetime.  And, even though you can't help but think, "there's got to be a machine...."; there isn't.  All done by hand.

Now where did my beer go....

Speaking of harvesting corks,
thought you may be interested in learning how they soak corks...
