Royal Purple - - - opinions please
« on: May 06, 2011, 06:14:07 PM »

Not only did I not think I'd ever start an oil thread, now that I have, I can't figure out where to put it. I just know d00d is gonna move it quicker than Kendra shakes her money maker. Sighhhhhhhhhhhh now there's a pleasant thought

Anyway, was at O'Reilly Autoparts today and I notice Royal Purple full syn 20/50 sells for $9/qt which is waaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper than AMSOIL. Now I'm not trying to lowball my motor but I hear about Royal Purple all the time on the Powerblock shows so I'm wondering if anyone is using it in their H-D engine (not trans or primary) and if so, what do you think ?

Thanks

 :P :P :P

The differences in performance between Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline and Mobil 1 are so insignificant the buying decision should be on cost and availability.  I use Mobil 1 since it is more readily available one the road if ever needed.  That said, I have over 80,000 on three engines with Mobil 1 with no issues.

Royal Purple is a great choice (as is Redline and Amsoil).

Just my two cents worth.

See chart below for test results of various brands.  Note that the brand everyone loves to hate, Syn3, rates higher than Royal Purple.  Also note, there are several other highly advertised brands that rate worse.  As far as I'm concerned, any oil that meets the SAE and API requirements for a Harley engine is fine.  Trust me, any failures you experience won't be caused by the oil.

What a wild table and mix of oil, gear lube, and grease specs.  Who published that?

Click on the link in the post right above yours for the complete report.  It was published by Amsoil in 2009.  And the reason for the mixture of specs is that the latest fad of using one product in all 3 holes finds your motor oil now trying to protect transmission gears.  Thus the inclusion of specs related to transmission lubrication.

I use Mobile 1 20/50 with great success.  Price is right $9.49 / qt. at Auto Zone.  Just picked up 7 quarts yesterday because they are running a sale of 2 dollars off per quart.

IMHO, not only is Mobil 1 V-Twin price competitive, but it is also much easier to find without having to order it online or go to a specific motorcycle shop.  Highly rated, very competitive price, easy to find.  Sounds like a good choice to me, and that's why I've been using it since it first became available.

Thanks for that Jerry and FYI, I have that table. It's one of the things I cite in telling people not to put high sulfur content oil in the primary case.  I guess I should have refined my question to ask what experience people had had with Royal Purple. One of the reasons I switched to Amsoil was that it quieted the clatter from the cam chain and valves down. Another was what I felt it's resistance to viscosity breakdown at high temps was superior to other brands. My question here comes from the fact that I am about to take LD to Maine where it will stay. It's gotten to where I find more time and folks to ride with in Maine for the 5 months a year I spend there than I do out here in Dago over the "winter" Also, with a lot of friends for whom I do routine maintenance here borrowing a bike is not an issue. At the end of 2012 I will go looking for a used Road King to have here. Not that it matters to this discussion but my wife and I are focusing this year and the first 1/2 of next on becoming debt free so she can retire next year. In any event, Amsoil is not popular in Maine. Whether the price is a factor, there's no need for it or the distributors are few and far between, I don't hear of people using it. I have a lot of Hot Rod buddies in Maine and they all buy Royal Purple from Reilly. So anyway, that was my thinking. Seems however the best and easiest choice however would be Mobile 1. Thanks all for the comments

PS- - - I noticed that you can buy Mobil 1 in gallon jugs for about a $2 savings over four individual quarts

I won't pretend to speak for the folks who sponsored those tests, but at the time the first round of testing was designed (2005) Redline didn't make a blip large enough to see on the motorcycle motor oil sales charts.  I believe the original idea of the test was to take the top selling products on the market at that time and test them, not necessarily to seek out every possible product no matter how small it's presence in the overall market.  I like conspiracy theories as much as the next guy, but I'm not convinced the folks at AMSOIL purposely left out products that they thought might test better than their own.  If you look at the individual tests, you will note than AMSOIL did not come in at #1 in 6 of the 11 categories, and ranked as low as 7th and 8th in two categories.

I would like to see the current Redline V-Twin product tested to those same standards and compared, but I would expect it would make more sense for Redline to do it if they feel they have a superior product.  So far they haven't done so, even though they are fully aware of this AMSOIL sponsored test report that's been floating around for the past 5 years.  Hmmmmmmmmmm.....................

Just curious if my info is correct - - -Redline is an extremely high sulfur content product - - - yes or no ?  As mentioned in a previous post, it's my understanding that high sulfur content lubricants destroy your fibre clutch plates

Very good. Thanks for the explanation.

Personally, I would like to see testing done by an independent lab. That way you can 'hopefully' avoid any conflicts of interest.
