Mapquest to Road Tech 660
« on: May 09, 2011, 12:29:02 AM »

Now that I've had my new FLTRUSE for a couple of weeks, I decided to try out some of the GPS functions.  First off, I picked my nearest HD dealer and had it take me there.  Only it took me to a location where this dealer used to be -- six years ago!  Brand new GPS and Harley dealer list is that far out of date?  After searching a bit, I found the links to update the list (which at least fixed this particular dealer location).

But back to the subject line...  I've been using Mapquest a lot and am used to it, so I built a route of backroads to a restaurant about 35 miles away.  I tried to send it to my GPS but got a message stating "Garmin Communicator not installed".  So I found that and downloaded it.  During installation, it insisted that I close all my browser windows, so I lost all the work I did in Mapquest.  After rebuilding the Mapquest route, I sent it to the GPS.  It gave me two choices:  Send as route or waypoints.  I chose, probably mistakenly, the "route" choice.  When I went to try it out, the GPS kept trying to reroute me on to the more direct interstate route.  It was as if only the start and end points were entered and the GPS was trying to calculate the most direct route.

Would have choosing "waypoints" made a difference?  I didn't enter any waypoints in Mapquest, but if you have to drag the route a lot to get on the roads you want, it makes little dots at the drag points.   I don't know if those are treated as 'waypoints' or not.

I've built a new test route in Mapsource and that may be a viable way to go, but I'd like to know if there's a way to keep a route intact when built in Mapquest and sending to the Road Tech.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  I've read through most of the 'mapping' threads but nothing seemed to directly address this question.

I just today got turned on to the Harley "rideplanner" site.  It uses Bing maps, they drag simply.....I won't have a chance to try the transfer to GPS until tomorrow, but it sure seems to be the hot ticket.  If you have a chance, check it out and let us know.

I've used it a lot.  Works great!

Thanks for that - I'm already on V3.00.

For those that don't know; while this only comes on the HD RoadQuest Zumo, it will happily install to the normal Garmin version of the 660 too.  ;)

Essentially your custon route is a series of waypoints, not specifying this option is most likely the cause of your grief.

Got to agree with others that the HD Ride Planer is a great tool, works wel and easy to use. Though I have only up loaded to a Garmin GPS.

I've just tried installing the HD Dealer POI download from the link that CTcvorider gave (onto a Zumo 660 not a RoadTech), and although it appeared to install OK I can't find it on the zumo. Should it be listed under POIs?

Nope.  It appears as a separate item under the "where to" heading.

not really on topic, but anyhow: I got used to plan - and share - my routes with google maps. I use Tyre to send them to my 660 or - which is very handy in Europe - distribute them to TomTom- or Becker-users. Garmin is not as predominant over here as it seems to be in the US.

With tyre the routes sent to Zumo are almost 100 % identical PC to Zumo - if the same preferences are used on both.

You have to adjust your road preference  (major vs minor) on the Zumo. That may get you closer to the route you planned, but you may need to set up intermediate waypoints  to have it match exactly.

Just planned a route using the ride feature in the Harley site.  Downloaded to Garmin and works great.  Exactly as I planned it. Can't wait to head to the Deals Gap area in a couple of weeks! :bananarock:

What I did initially was to copy the file off a friend's Roadquest 660 onto mine, and thereafter it appears properly, so I guess where the file is installed may be important. If I could remember what the file was called, I'd be able to tell you where to put it!
