putting the front backrest on??
« on: May 09, 2011, 08:16:57 PM »

2001SERG, not sure how the backrest locks in. Is the part
with the pins suppose to lock in? Maybe only when leaning
back would the pressure lock it in. Not sure if it is somehow
broken.

Those pins lock into the holes on the sides of the bracket.  There are three positions to chose from.  Make sure you are on the same hole on both sides.  Really not that difficult.

MAKE SURE YOU EVEN HAVE THE BRACKET!!!!!!!

Its a gold-looking square slot you can see through the slit in the seat.  Don't just shove the backrest in there without knowing the bracket is installed...yikes! :nervous: :nervous: :nervous:

Also, your backrest's two tangs should have a spring between them that you have to pinch to install it in the slot.  There two nubs that fit into holes in the bracket to lock it in place...three height settings...good luck!

A picture is worth a thousand sixty or seventy words.

In the line drawing the bracket shown is bolted on top of the rear fender.  The legs of the backrest itself must be compressed inward to fit inside the bracket.  It can be an annoying thing to do until you get used to the feel of it.

I don't believe that is the  right picture, or the right backrest for a SERG 01. The backrest bar/bracket  has 2 holes in it.

I don't believe that is the  right picture, or the right backrest for a SERG 01. The backrest bar/bracket  has 2 holes in it.

The pic above is the very common and nearly ubiquitous Harley backrest mount.  It was on everything; for years.  You have to be wrong.  That has to be it.  Except you're not not wrong and that's not it.      :huepfenlol2:

Don't know if I never knew or had simply forgotten that the 01 SERG used the adjustable backrest from the P&A book. But your "two hole" description sounded like it.  A quick look in the parts manual for 01 SERGs confirmed it (now you know why you need a parts manual for your bike -- exploded illustrations are the bomb).

Here you go.  Got all this or missing anything?

Thanks. I have everything in the picture. Its just that when I slide
in the backrest, its not locking in. I will take pictures later today
of the piece that's not locking into the post of the backrest.

You're probably doing this.  But just in case:

The lever on the left side for adjustability; pull it out to release the spring tension in the bracket.  Inside the mounting bracket there are a couple of bumps that line up with the holes in the backrest.
