Exhaust Question
« on: May 08, 2006, 11:22:29 AM »

New 2006 FBSE owner!!!  I'll have to do an intro some other time  :).

I have an exhaust question and I have tried a search on this on a few forums and haven't found a concrete answer.
I am going to be putting on the Screamin Eagle 16 Gauge pipes.  From what I understand the bike comes stock with the Stage I Air Cleaner, and from this I would assume it has the standard HD download for the Stage I A/C with stock pipes,
is this true?

When the new pipes are installed will there be a new download necessary (ignoring the possibility of SERT or aftermarket tune - that is for another day)??  I had thought yes, but in some of my search it seems otherwise.  Some are convinced the download is only for the A/C (doesnt seem to make sense to me).

Thanks for any help you can give!  Great forum, and I really look forward to riding!

When you speak of "Stage 1 A/C" are you referring to filter only? I can only speak for my bike ('04 SEEG) and it didn't come w/that. I had to upgrade to the SE Air Cleaner (which is the backing plate that allows more airflow, and filter upgrade) when I upgraded pipes. I think because of EPA rules and regulations that the backplate/filter are more restrictive on a stock bike, even though we have CVO/Screamin' Eagle bikes they still have to meet the same EPA standards as all bikes.

You can upgrade to the SE A/C (or you can put together your own S/E by checking this thread: "Roll Your Own" SE Air Cleaner) and get the Stage 1 flash done to your ECM. That and the exhaust upgrades you are speaking of should work fine.

BTW - Welcome to the site, and so you can be officially welcomed we want to see your scooter.

ncdoc,

The SE Fatboy stock calibration (103 Stage 1 Legal) is p/n 32467-06B, and should be what you currently have.  H-D also lists another calibration for 103" Softails, (103 Stage 1 Race), p/n 34302-06.  If H-D follows the same convention they use on the other models, the Stage 1 Race calibration is for SE Pro pipes and air cleaner.  You already have the air cleaner, but I don't know if there is a big enough flow difference between your stock pipes and the ones you plan to install to require the download.  The fact that they have two separate calibrations and part numbers leads me to believe it would be a good idea, however.

Thanks for the speedy reply, I think you are correct about the air cleaner element, etc.  I believe I will need the kit and flash, as I do not think these are stock (EPA, etc - as you said).

Pictures to come shortly (once dig camera up)!!!

Thanks for the welcome!

You might want to check out what the 02 sensor is all about, I'm not sure flashing the memory really does any good. I think all 06 bikes have the 02 sensor.

2soaper,

Only the Dyna's have O2 sensors for '06.  I'll bet they all have them in '07 though.

Well, this issue turns out to be A LOT more complex than I had hoped.  This is what I could figure out:

The FBSE seems to come from the factory with the SE Pro Air Cleaner and Breather Kit, which is available from the Screamin Eagle Racing catalog (29440-99C).  At least the number on the back of the backplate (on the bike - I checked with a mirror) matches the part number in the 29440-99C kit. Although this is a “race” part, it is street legal with the proper tune (download).

The HD catalog part for the Stage I EFI Kit is 27743-02B.  This is what the dealer wants to install to complete my Stage I package with the new exhaust.

I have read differing opinions on the equivalence of these parts.  Some people thought it was a filter issue, however they both use paper filters.  Some say the backplate design is slightly different.  Some say they are the exact same part, packaged differently (“race” vs EPA certified).

I have decided to give up trying to figure it out J.  I feel it is likely the same part however I am going to let the HD dealer replace it at the time they put on my new exhaust.  It seems to me that this is the safest way to avoid potential problems down the road with the dealer.  It may cause me to waste $130, but I have done a lot worse.  If I ever find out more information regarding this I will let you all know.  Thanks for all the help, pictures and intro soon!!

ncdoc,

Trust me, they are the same part.  The only thing you should change is the air filter element - buy a real K&N oiled filter, K&N P/N HD-0800, to replace the paper element Harley currently uses.  The backplate and fittings do not need to be changed.

If your dealer doesn't know that the FB already has the real SE air cleaner, shame on him for not knowing his product line.  If he does know, and is just trying to screw you out of an additional $139.95, then I would be finding a new dealer for all future parts and service needs ASAP.

Amen.

I also agree.  Buy the K&N Filter.  I had the blue HD air filter come apart inside.  I have a thread on here somewhere about it.  Bummer was, you couldn't tell there was a problem with the filter from the outside.  Only way I found it, thankfully, was that I just bought the new K&N and wanted to install it....

Thanks for all the information.  Makes me feel very comfortable keeping the current air cleaner in place.

Thanks also for the K&N info.  I have heard about the experience with the HD blue filter.  Interestingly my 2006 came with a black backed filter (still paper), guess HD got word of the problem?

I'll let you all know how the install goes next week.  Glad I joined the site.

When (how long after purchase of SEFB) did you go to the K&N filter? I'm just looking for a time frame. When you were installing the race tuner or just doing some upgrades? Ya think I shiould do the filter change too? Hey, I'm getting a SE 50mm throttle body and a closed loop computer module..AND i found a grip of tuners/wrenches in one building here locally. Think I'll need the K&N filter now?

kona76,
I am fairly sure the SE 50mm throttle body will not fit the stock CVO heads as it is a one piece (manifold & throttle body in one) the inlet port is too small & will not mate to the SE 50mm manifold without machining of the inlet ports.
What does the closed loop computer module do ???

Cheers

I believe this is correct, you will need to either machine your stock 103 cvo heads or replace them with 103+ or CNC posted heads.  I used the cnc heads with the 50mm tb and it's bolt on easy 8-)

My guess would be around the 5000 mile mark, give or take.
