110...here we go again....new lifters
« on: May 13, 2011, 05:03:04 AM »

My first set of lifters crapped out at 40,000 miles or so.  At 43,000 or so, noise started coming back - took it to the dealer at 46,000 cause it sounded just like it did at 40,000.  BTW, lifters were noisy ONLY at cold start AND for the first 2-3 miles (but really noisy, didn't want to rev it above 2000-2200 rpm!!).  BTW, oil pressure is always fine per the gauge right from startup.
Now dealer says 2nd set had 2 bad lifters and they are replacing all with new again!  They have checked oil flow, passages, etc and all is good.

Anyone else have this experience??

Tennisman, on my 09SEUC my lifters are quiet when they are cold. As soon as the engine is hot they are noisey between about 2200 and 2800 RPM.(actually they cycle from noisey to quiet and I always have good oil pressure) It gets irritating during some riding conditions, but I am not going to do anything about it until something breaks and the bike needs work. Naturally my local HD (everything costs $100.00) tech took it for a ride and said that it is normal. Next oil change gets Amsoil 60 WT synthetic. It keeps my 95 Heritage with S&S 107 quiet so I will give it a try in my 09.CAHDBIKER

You sure that noise is the lifters?
110's have the piston slap noise between 2200 and 2800.

"...Now dealer says 2nd set had 2 bad lifters and they are replacing all with new again!..."

Maybe he'll install a new set of "C" lifters.
It's official, 18538-99C lifters have been released from the MoCo this week.
Around here, have had plenty of great luck with the good ol' "B's".

I bet it's piston slap.. my FLSTSE2 has that problem at only 4000 miles...  Cylinders are over a thousandth out of speck.. too large... only hear it from 2500 - 2800 rpm

Why do I have this strange feeling that the "C" stands for Chinese?

Yes, it's lifters.  The first time they replaced all 4 lifters, the engine was stone quiet at startup.  (So it's also NOT piston slap).  Definitely lifter related.
When did they go to suffix 'C'?  My first lifter replacement was in Nov, 2010.

There are different options on lifters ,my tunner is making a new set that have been hardened and revalved so thet won't score and make noise.  jdo

Even my woods directional lifters are noisy at start-up (this is noted in the instructions)

no sign of them failing.. but piston slap?... yep.. 27-3400 though

My 08 had the lifter noise , but stopped when I put the S&S cams and lifters in.
So at Mile 3 on the 11, I did the same thing, only this time I used the S&S lifters with the anti drain back.
Very nice at start up, cold or hot, plus more reliable than stock junk.  (IMHO)

Funny thing though, my 08 didn't have piston slap and the 11 does. (DAMN)
Darn crap shoot anyway.   ha

SBB, you are probably right. I had a situation with an S&S 107 engine a couple of years ago that you would swear was valve train related, but it was piston slap. Luckily it was still under warranty.  I took my 09 into the dealer right after I got it and told the tech about the noise. He took if for a ride and of course he said that was "Normal".
