JUST RECEIVED 440'S AND NEED BASIC STARTING POINT
« on: May 13, 2011, 11:12:02 AM »

I just got a pair of Progressive 13" 440's from another member.

I'm installing them on an '09 SERG.  I weigh in at about 260 and my wife is about 100 lighter.  See, I didn't say how much she weighed, did I...

I've hear all about two rings, three rings etc.  But these look like they use a type of spanner wrench on the upper cap to preload them.

Do I back the upper cap off and then go so many turn?

Any help to get me started would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all...

All the way counterclockwise is "0".
Clockwise takes it up from there.

What Chip didn't tell you......by hand. :)

I hope those are 13" HD Progressive 440s.  If they're not heavy duty and just the regular 440's I don't think you're going to be happy.  I'm 220 lbs. and I had the HD 440s on my SEEG and a couple times riding two up, loaded we'd still bottom out.

The down side of buying them used....you're not the original purchaser.  Progessive has great customer service and warranty.  One of mine started to leak after two or three years....I called and they told me to send them in.  They rebuilt both shocks.....looked like two new shocks when I got them back. :2vrolijk_21:

OK JC, once again your right.
Three of my bikes have the Progressive HD.
Have sent 2 of the sets back to be rebuilt.
Warranty for life to the original purchaser.
Actually what happened was one shock was leaking of each set and Progressive wanted both back to be rebuilt.

Dan, I turned mine all the way counter clockwise and then put a black dot on the outside top of each shock.  Then I could count the turns clockwise I made so that each shock would have the same amount of turns.  Real rocket science, but I am your weight and have them set in the middle for solo and add two more turns for my BSR and/or loaded for travel.  They were a big improvement over the stock air shock.  Enjoy.

JC, yes they are the HD model.  They are also 13" where my SERG is only 12", so I'll get some added ride comfort by default of the added 1".

CVORick.  I thought around the middle might be a starting point and I can go from there either direction.  I've read that some just keep the same setting for both 1 or 2 up.

I appreciate all the input and see how they work out for me.

Thanks again everyone and have a great weekend.

While I was off from having surgery I called Progressive because I noticed oil on my saddlebag and my ride went to crap! I found out that there is a lifetime warranty on these 440 shocks! :2vrolijk_21: I removed and sent them in and for $30 they will change out my springs to heavy duty. Great customer service as JC mentioned. I came across this video on how to properly adjust the shocks. Thought I'd share it with you...
