Front Pulley Nut
« on: May 14, 2011, 08:20:47 PM »

I'm trying to change my front pulley to a 30T but I can't get the pulley nut to come loose. I've used my impact gun and applied small amount of heat to the nut
with any success. I'm going to try a 3/4 impact tomorrow. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.     Chilly

You might try a bit of liquid wrench or PB blaster between the pulley and the nut.  Sometimes you get a nice bit of rust bonding the two together. Good luck.

I not sure but could it be a left handed thread?

It's a real tight fit. Had to use the impact the whole way. I think it had lock tight on it.

I duoble checked the direction of threads, they are right handed. I'll try different impact tomorrow, if that doesn't work I'll try a large cheater bar
       Thanks  Chilly

I've changed 4 of them. It isn't left handed threads. It is just that tight. I use a Snap on 1/2 impact with a socket from Georges Garage. If your impact won't work on it. I suggest a breaker bar and a pipe for extension. You will have to use a holder to keep the pully from turning. Good luck.

Well I got the nut  to come off today. I ended up raising the air pressure to 170psi and then the nut started to loosen, Will be putting back together
during the week. Hope to be happy with results.   Chilly :orange: :mango: :bananarock:

No reason to use a new nut unless threads/flats  are damaged, which they shouldn't be.  Ive removed/reinstalled many of them with out replacing the Nut, But ensure you follow the manual for reinstalling  the nut

Yes, make sure you follow the manual instructions.  This is another of those applications where you use a torque + angle method to tighten the nut.  And when you install the lock plate and you need to rotate the nut to make the plate line up, always go tighter with the nut, never loosen it to make the alignment.

New nuts will have thread locker already on the part.  If you reuse the old nut, thoroughly clean the threads and then use high strength red loctite.  The part of the nut that actually contacts the sprocket should be lubricated with a light film of oil, but not the threads.

What is the best way to lock the pulley for tightening? HD tool? Is there a way to do it without buying another tool? Aftermarket tool?

Haven't used it, but if it does the job and you only plan to use it once or twice, why spend the big bucks for the kind that's meant to be used all the time by a professional mechanic?  It isn't worth more unless you use it often.  JMHO.
