If the axle nut is very tight and just won't budgle an old dune buggy axle tool comes in handy:

Socket for the torque wrench:

Can use the dune buggy tool to hold the axle on one side while tightening on the other.  Or could always use some version of what most Harley shops have:

If I remember correctly the pad pins are just a 1/4" 12 point socket.

Axle nut - 36 mm open/box wrench.  Northern Tool, about $15.  Buy 2.

You will need 12 point 1/4" socket to remove the brake pad pins.

Looks like your in good hands, the only other thing I use if the nut won't break loose is my electric impact, saves from beating with a hammer and glancing off which in my case usually led to dings in the pipes.

picked up 2 36mm 1/2" sockets this morning

following the procedure in the shop manual i pulled the mufflers off

brakes are done just waiting to get rim and tire back for a local indy shop

Just an FYI option for next time Neal.  I've always found it easier and quicker to take off the lower shock bolts.  Axle will drop low enough won't have to take the mufflers off.

thanks for the tip, those mufflers didnt seem to want to come off after 9 years
