HK Sound intermittent....Garmin 660 and Hawg Wired System
« on: May 22, 2011, 08:34:00 AM »

I had an issue yesterday during my day long ride with may radio system....after about 3 hours listening to MP3 from the 660, the sound just stopped coming out of the speaker...changed the radio from AUX to AM,FM ect and still nothing....the radio display seem to working ok..I then stopped for a break, fired up the bike and then it worked for about 3 min then quite again.

Got up this morning and it seem to working again...

A little history:

Bike is a 2010 Ultra Limited
I have the Garmin 660 GPS
Hawg wired amp system

I have had no problems for the last 1 1/2 years (22K miles)....the only changes that I have made prior to having this issue is that now I am using the Garmin's 660 wiring harness for the AUX input.  Prior to this.... the AUX input to the radio was directly from the side jack on the Garmin 660.....I got tired of seeing the wire....so ran an extension wire from the audio output on the Garimin's wiring harness that is in the faring and snaked it under the inner faring and then plugged it into the radio's AUX input.... worked great until the yesterday(short runs though)

I am thinking that both time the sound stopped at the point of a directional command from the GPS(not sure though)

Does any one know one have any ideas?

Are their any internal thermal overloads in the HK radio or the Hawg amp the might be causing this issue?

Could this possibly be caused by Garimin's wiring harness....being that the harness is doing something to its audio output that is causing the HK radio to lockup( some type of internal safety circuit to protect its self)?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Don't think anything you did with the Garmin wiring would cause this issue.
Voice commands would not lock up the radio...it simply sees it as audio

There is a thermal protection circuit in the audio section to protect the internal amp of the radio.
That would take some pretty high volume settings for a good amount of time.
Will usually come back in a couple of minutes if it did activate.
Dont Know if the Hawg Wired amp has thermal protection.

If it happens again, switch the speaker switch from speaker to headset, wait a few seconds, then switch it back.
If the audio returns, usually an internal board issue.

Sounds like what happened to the radio in my '10 SESG.....had to send it to Iron Cross for repair.

Thanks for the information.....I had the radio on for 6 hours yesterday while I was cleaning the garage and had not issues.

I am thinking that this is heat related now....since the only time it has happened was on a hot day in the heat of the afternoon.

Thanks again

I lost all sound last summer on a trip. It turned out to be the fuse in the HW amp itself. The fuse didn't blow, but the vibration fractured one of the feet. Yours could be loose and not completely fractured, so it comes and goes.
