Heated grips
« on: May 23, 2011, 12:35:02 PM »

Hello guys and gals  :)
I finally picked up my Inferno Street Glide  :jalapeno: To my suprise the bike came with heated grips from the factory. Has anyone else recieved this luxury option ? I didn't think the SG came with them. Maybe it's a Wisconsin thing :nixweiss: I'm not complaining  :-X.I wished I had them on my Ultra many times.
I'll post pics of the bike soon.

I believe the heated grips are standard , at least for the 2011 FLTRUSE.

WOW.....Be very happy and grateful. That was something i really wanted when i got my SG. The dealer priced them and ordered them for me. The same as the Ultra because i wanted the same grips as the original SG since i did not want to change the look and and really liked them. After the dealer tried to install them they told me it can be done BUT since the 2011 SG did not come with a plug in the harness they would have to splice and run new wires to make them work. I said go ahead. 2 days later they call me and said that it can be done BUT they would need about 11 hours of labour because they had to run wires everywhere. At that point i said forget it. Since i knew that Harley has a bad history with heated grips not working. There was days when i wished i had them in March when i was riding at or below the freezing mark but overall it was not that bad.

Be happy...very happy it is a nice perk that you got. :2vrolijk_21:

I wonder how Harley wired Shindo's grips in.

I wonder how Harley wired Shindo's grips in.

Just a GUESS but maybe they used a wiring harness from a Ultra or a 2010 SG. They told me that the wiring harness was new for 2011 and the plug to plug in the grips was not there. For the assembly line to just keep things moving it had to be a very quick fix. Plug and go. The only way to do that is if the plug was there which means a different wiring harness.

Remember everyone i am GUESSING.  :nixweiss:

Without looking at a schematic I would assume the heated grips have a 12V supply and a negative. The acc. switch is very close to the handle bars seems like a easy mod to me!  Im just sayin.  11 hrs seems way out of line. I think you made a wise choice to walk away from that one.
I haven't had to install heated grips, it would get really really hot using them here in Florida. now chilled grips.............Hmmmmm

That answers the dealers 11 hours, they always seem slower than the accomplished do it your self person.   :coolblue:

What they told me was that to wire it properly they had to run wires down the frame and back up again and the hole (i do not know which one now) will not accommodate all the wires. What i do know is that the dealer did a good job themselves in talking me out of it. They even started telling me how much better heated gloves are. They must know something because they simply did not what to do it at the end.

Suggest you take your bike elsewhere, it's not that hard to install the H-D grips. Just did one friday, and took about 1 1/2 hr + 2 beers. "Plug and Play"

Love my heated grips. However I'm going to get my second throttle grip as the glue holing it on has let go again. It's covered by the dealer. if not the cost is $240. That is a rip off.
