Cam recommendation for 09 SERG?
« on: May 24, 2011, 02:50:21 PM »

Just experienced a lifter problem on my 09 SERG and repair includes replacing cam.  Getting a price on stock CVO cam, but also deciding if I should upgrade the cam.  I know there are several threads on the best cam, but was hoping to get some input on this thread as to what works best.  Bike is running D&D 2 into 1 pipes/header and have installed TTS.  What works for you guys?

Also, will be deciding between stock lifters and possibly Fueling HP lifter.

CYCLE-RAMA  575 CAMS
Feuling 574 REAPER cams

Can't go wrong with either cam.
Don't know what to tell you about lifters, seems most builders I have spoken with are happy with the Harley B-Lifters.
However it is my understanding that Harley has a new version C- lifter out.

Thanks Greg, a few good choices, but Andrews 54 seems to have some good impressions on this site. Will probably go with the Andrews and .030 gasket. Bike is in the shop, need to get it done asap as I don't want to miss the GTG in Tahoe.

I recently emailed Steve @ Fullsac cause I am about to buy a 'Road Glide and he recommended the Andrews 54 for a 103 or 110 . He likes em! I had Andrews 26g in my old 95" bagger and really liked it so I am sticking with Andrews.

Thanks for the input.  Was leaning towards the Andrews, but my bike mechanic (who knows a hell of a lot more than I do - and trustworthy) recommended the Reaper 574.  So I said, do it!  He's also great with a dyno so can't wait to try this out.

ADC,   tell us more about your lifter issue.   How many miles?  was it the roller failure?

Slightly less than 20k miles on the 09 SERG, and only a couple months out of warranty.  Bike is still in the shop so do not have an exact cause yet.  I will be finding out more about the failure as I will be in contact with HD HQ's re: cost reimbursement.  There were no definite signs when pulled out.  Seemed properly lubricated, possibly pre-mature wear by lifter.  Will post more as I get some info.

Anyone know of any previous history on this matter?

There have been several reports of lifter failures. If you do a search or look around in the Twin Cam section.  Keep us posted ADC.

42,xxx and change and had a lifter go out and mess up the cam. Running SE251's. Dealer replaced cams and lifters. I believe during this next winter I will replace the lifters with new Velva Touch lifters and some better rocker arms, not sure what kind yet. Will probably change the oil pump too. Just not happy with oil pressure, around 30lbs at most rpm's.

I'm thinking a check every 10K for me.
You know, twice a year.

I had a lifter go bad at about 23,000 miles.  I had the Andrews 54h put in with the SE lifters.  What a difference, the bike finally runs the way it should!
