I got my new bike a few weeks ago.  I purchased a set of Vance and Hines exhaust and rode about 150 miles.  Long story short, I now have a set of Reinharts.  Since then I have been hearing a rattle/tapping/ticking noise from the engine starting at 1800 RPM through 2800 RPM.  Cruising at 2400 it seems to be the loudest.  I'm hearing the noise over the exhaust.  I'm thinking I couldn't hear it at first due to the loud Vance and Hines.  I took it back to the dealer and they said it could be valve train noise and that it was normal.  Is anyone else experiencing this and is the dealer blowing smoke up my butt saying that it is normal?

I have an '11 CVO ultra. I hear noise coming out of the
A/C in that same range IF i get on it. Quiets down at 3500
RPM. If I back off the throttle slightly, noise goes away.
Sounds like a fluttering. Dealer said it was the throttle body
Butterfly? Common in the 110's. Sure is noisier than the 103
but still lots of fun.

Yep, a dealerships canned answer is "that's normal on a 110" however, as many threads and posts on this forum will show, it's not normal.

The up side is your factory warranty just started so you can ride that "normal" bike for awhile and not have to worry about it. 

The down side.....based on mine and others experiences here, it could be the crank or flywheels, the lifters, valve guides or any number of other things.  You might want to start looking for a dealership that is willing to acknowledge that there's something unusual.  I certainly didn't have any noise coming from my motor (a 2010 SESG) until I reached 30,000 miles so if your noise is normal then mine wasn't......when it was new.  Since then, they've replaced my flywheels and are now replacing my heads.

The noise is there wether I am getting on it or just accellerating normally.  It's very annoying.

Have you checked all of the heat shields. I had the same problem after my Indy put my 2 into 1 on. He came back from the test ride, said the heat shields were touching. I looked at him like he was nutzz but bigger than life sitting there you could hear it. He spent another hour adjusting the heat shields till he got them set so the did not hit. The noise us just like you have described.

Check your exhaust system, from the heads back.
Had a bike here complaining of the same noise after a muffler/pipe change.
Nut was loose under the trans mount to head pipe connection.
Just a thought.

My '07 has done it since the day I got it, stock exhaust, new exhaust.  Dealer/MoCo toned their mantra of, "just what they do" so were no help. It's not a heat shield - it's inside.  Welcome to 110 world.

Did you replace the headers too?  Did you replace the exhaust gasket each time?  I'm guessing it's a gasket that was reused.

Kind of a clicking/rattling sound?  Like valve train noise?  All of mine have done it, including the 2011.

Went with a CARQUEST # 84148 oil filter and took more than 50 % rattleing away...    2010 FLHTK   Better flow I guess..

08 SE Ultra, the same noise, and it drives me nuts. Ok above 3000 or under 2100 on mine. If anyone ever figures it out PLEASE post it!

I have a 2010 1/2 and it does the same thing.  My great mechanics told me I should use heavier oil.  The noise is coming from the valve springs. Wants me to stop using the SYN 3 and go for the regular Harley Oil.

On a side note......you've already had two sets of exhaust on that bike.  You'd have been a bucket load of $$$ (and performance and tone) ahead if you'd have just got the Fullsac X pipe and baffles in your stock exhaust.  And, the icing on the cake.....the stock exhaust looks better than all those aftermarket!  JMHO

FOUND IT!
My 2008 CVO Ultra has made this noise since Day 1 - and it has been driving me crazy for almost 4 years. I am the first to admit I am overly critical of my bike - but the motor and primary have been torn down 3 times [for other issues] and the source of this aggravating sound was never found.
The noise continued and was VERY pronounced between 2,800 and 3,100 rpm.

Until now......

Replaced my stock windshield with a Klock Werks 8.5" Flare Windshield 10 days ago...

The noise is reduced to the point where most of the time I can't hear it and other times it is just barely noticeable.

Only thing I can figure is that the height and curved shape of the stock shield served to not only reflect this noise directly up and towards the rider - but that the curvature of the stock shield was such that it actually served to AMPLIFY the noise. [much like the shape of a satellite dish serves to concentrate received signals and direct signals gathered over a wide area to a single point, I guess].

AMAZING!

Never would have thunk it - but after 31,000 miles of aggravating me to the point that it actually reduced my riding pleasure.....  I NOW have the bike I wanted in the first place!

Of course - there are other HUGE benefits of a Klock Werks Flare windshield, but this one alone made the purchase price of the shield the best money I have ever spent on the bike!

p.s. - I DO NOT work for Klock Werks, so there is no reason whatsoever that I would promote this product other that the fact that it truly worked for me!
