Starter Issue
« on: May 11, 2006, 07:14:24 PM »

My new CUSE is now reading 500 miles.  I love this bike.  But recently (this  week) I have experienced two situations where I could not get the Starter to turn over.
The bike tends to cough and then stall when I pull out after the traffic light turns green.  Recently I would hit the starter button and get absolutely nothing - just like when the battery is dead.  Now if I turn the ignition off and then on, wait for EFI light to go out the bike starts.  It is scary to think of being stranded.
I will get the matter addressed at the first 1000 ck but has anyone else experienced this issue?  I switched to the chrome starter unit.

Starter problems that come to mind would not be intermittent other than electical connections. So, I'd go over the battery cables, the starter cable etc. This sounds for sure like you've got a loose wire. You say you changed out the starter. I'm assuming you had your dealer do it. Wouldn't be the first time a service tech didn't button everything up tight at the end. Your stalling problem could be related to starting you bike before the fuel pump light is off. Sometimes if you push the start button before your fuel pressure is up, the bike will misfire or run ragged. Not sure why that is, but someone once told me that it will correct itself if you shut the bike off, turn it on again waiting for the fuel indicator light to go off and restart the bike. Something to do with the way the EFI senses the fuel flow or whatever. Next stop should be your dealer.

I agree with the assessment. I did have the dealer do all the work except the rear lighting addition.  I might of made an error on the too early a start  thought but this is my third EFI equipped Glide that it is hard to believe.  The loose wire is something we will have cked out for sure.  Thanks.

We have fuel injected Police Road Kings at my place of employment. The issue came up about waiting for the engine light to go out before starting because sometimes you cannot wait on a police MC. I don't know if the police models are set up any differently - and I doubt it - but the manual says it can be done, and it has been done many times without problems. Sometimes you have to fire them up immediately and blast off and we have never encountered a driveability problem.

You are right.  I now have a totally sick bike.  The bike will not start and needs a doctor.

Starter problem resolved.  Apparently when installing CHROME starter the tech must of stripped the threads on the inner primary-to ground strap.  All is well and performing fab.  :D

I had a similar problem. The ground wire to the frame just needed a little tightening up. 2 second fix.
