Upgraded speakers
« on: May 12, 2006, 11:20:38 AM »

I know this has been discussed in the past in terms of initial replacement, but my question is: now that you've had "better" speakers for a while, what are your thoughts??  Which ones did you go with and how are they holding up?  If you could have done/gotten something different, what would it be?  I'm looking to replace all 4 on mine before we do the CC run, so let me hear the good and the bad.  I'm not ready to spend the $ for better amps yet, but may in the future.  Thanks for you advice!!

Good question, after my long ride this past week behind another bike with pipes, I decided the stockers just weren't cutting it.  I had Hogtunes on my '04 Ultra and they were better, but I understand the ones for the new HK stereo don't make alot of improvement.  Yesterday I ordered the Polk db525's from Crutchfield, they have a buy one get one half off deal on the Polks right now.  Mine should be arriving today, I'm gonna try to get em installed today or tomorrow and get some seat time in to see how they do.  They are Marine certified so the weather shouldn't bother em and the impedance is pretty close to the stockers (2ohm vs. 4ohm), going up in impedance shouldn't hurt the amp any like the older systems where you were going from 8ohm down to 4ohm, which will burn up amps quick.  I also ordered a set of speaker baffles to put behind the ones in the fairing, adding them on an older bike I had really improved bass response.

Well, the Polks are too deep for the rear pods, I'm gonna try to get em in the front tomorrow, and the other set will have to go back.

The HK radois use a 2 ohm speaker, you are correct in that the 4 ohm speakers will not harm the stereo but they also will not provide the same load and will not play as loud. Hawg-wired will have 2 ohm replacement speakers for the 06 bikes in the next week or so. They also have a new 4 ohm "component" speaker system that just rocks. i installed these in my bike today and was blown away by the increased performance between these and the previous Hawg-wired units. I am one of a few dealers that are running the new speakers throught the paces before they are officially released which will be in a week or so. I will post pics and more info on these in the Electronics forum soon.

Hey Guys,
Another stupid question I guess.  You are replacing your speakers to accomplish louder sound or better sound quality?  (or both I guess).  The stockers sound pretty decent to my old factory damaged ears.  When over 70 or so (not 100 Fr8TRN) I lose most of it and have to switch to the helmet speakers.  Around town they are plenty loud enough to get dirty looks from the soccer-moms [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

If FR8 can hear them at 100, mebbie they are worth it!  ;D

Well I hooked up a pair and tried em out against the other set, no real noticeable difference, both sets are going back to Crutchfield on Monday.  Perhaps the ones from Hawg Wired will make a difference, guess I'll wait for them to appear.......

Thanks for the input FR8TRN.  Those looked like good speakers.  I guess you never know until you try.  hd-dude, please keep us up to date on the 2 ohm speakers.  I'll be looking for a set of 4 post haste.  I need them to ride for Cripple Creek!!

Will do, I talked to HW on Saturday and confirmed that they should be ready to ship in about 2 weeks.

I went with the Hog tunes in my 06" ultra and they rock
the sound as far as quaility are really far better then I expected...and the volume can blow me away...If I get up and pklay with the fade i can get a high quaility sound that is most appealing to my old ears...
They are designed for the H-K which are set up for the 2 ohm speakers and if memory serves they have a 25 yr warranty
they should out last me...
and for $209 they seemed like a good buy and that was with shipping...

Currently have the new HawgWired component speaker set being driven by one of their amp kits all being fed by one of the 06 HK radios with XM.  It has so far been a very very nice combination.  Quite pleased.

CUSEiHAD2,
I had a set of the hawg-wireds for about a week.  Seems they changed some of the materials after the demo models were made.  The ones that were originally shipped were not as good as the stockers.  hd-dude is waiting (last word I got) on new ones from hawg-wired that should fix/correct the problem.  I'm certainly hoping so.  I had the Enhanced System on my 01 and it rocked with only 70 watts [smiley=banana.gif].  I'd like to think that with 160watts :o, I can drown out the punk next to me in his cage! ;D [smiley=banana.gif]

Where did you order the baffles? This sounds like a good idea even if you don't change out the speakers.
